A Trip Down Goshen Lane
Issue 15: Nov. 7, 2025
Principal's Message
Hello, Families,
👉 Reminder - THERE IS NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS THIS MONDAY, NOVEMBER 10TH. 👈
Enjoy your three-day weekend.
Donut Days: Thank you to all of our families who were able to attend the PTA Donut Days this week. It was wonderful seeing so many students and loved ones sharing time together at Goshen Lane. THANK YOU to our PTA for the thought, time, and effort in making this happen for all of us.
This Week's Question Around the Dinner Table:
- What is a veteran?
- What is one thing you would like to make sure you do on your 3-day weekend?
Have a great weekend,
Sharon Suriano
Principal
Veterans Day Celebration
On Tuesday, November 11th , Goshen Lane Elementary will celebrate Veterans Day by honoring Veterans who are relatives or friends of our students. There will be a school assembly at 1:45 PM. Prior to the assembly, veterans are invited to a light reception in the Library at 1:30 PM. All visiting veterans will be escorted by their students to the assembly. The assembly will last approximately 30 minutes. Veterans are invited to stay to talk with and share their experiences in their student’s class following the assembly. School dismisses at 2:40 PM. If your family has an interested Veteran who would like to attend, please sign up on the Veterans Day Family Letter. A paper copy of the letter went home with students this week, or you can print it from here.
During the assembly we would like to share pictures of our veterans: either with the Goshen student, or while in service to our country. If you have pictures you are willing to share please email them to: Mrs. Angie Buchert bucherta@gjps.org.

So Much Going on in ART with Ms. Zabor!
5th graders are currently working on pumpkin drawings. These drawings are inspired by the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama and her famous pumpkin paintings and sculptures. Students are working hard to create their pumpkins using organic shapes and small repetitive dots. The pumpkins are turning out great and really show how hard 5th graders can concentrate on small details!
4th graders are currently working on a raised gem corn project. Students first tore up brown paper to represent the corn husks and glued it down onto a larger sheet of paper. Next, students rolled small balls of model magic clay to represent kernels of corn and glued them under the corn husks. Next week students will finish making their kernels and start to paint their corn. Students loved using the model magic clay and making small shapes with it!
3rd graders started their self portraits this week! Students started this project by trying to draw themselves with no guidance, and they did an AWESOME job! Next we gathered as a group and worked on a guided drawing of a proportionally correct face. Next week students will learn about the artist Frida Kahlo and learn how to draw themselves from looking in a mirror. The following week students will start their final self-portrait, carefully drawing and coloring themselves and their favorite things. While some students are finding out how difficult drawing self-portraits can be, other students are finding a new love for portraiture!
2nd graders are currently working on big leaf paintings. First students drew large leaves, traced them with paint sticks, and then carefully cut them out. Students will finish this project by adding black and white dots in and around their leaves. Students worked hard to create leaves that took up their whole paper and carefully cut their leaves out.
1st graders are currently working on making colorful turkeys. Students started this project by using color bleeding tissue paper. The bleeding tissue paper is a super cool art tool that would be a great addition to art supplies at home. All you need to do is wet it with water, and the color will start to bleed out from the tissue paper. After finishing our tissue papers, we will draw the face and body of the turkey and start to assemble our turkeys!
Kindergarteners are currently working on their apple collage project. This lesson started with students listening to the book The Mouse’s Apples. In this book a mouse finds 4 apples, one green, one pink, one red, and one green. After listening to the book students colored their own apples the same 4 colors. Next, students will decorate a paper with a pattern of lines, cut out their apples, and glue their apples to the pattern paper. Finally, students will add texture to their apples by gluing tissue paper to their apples. The apples are looking extra yummy and students are excited to create the apples they have been learning about.
Questions to ask your student at home:
What are the warm colors? What are the cool colors?
What is a self portrait? Would you rather draw a picture of yourself or someone else?
Naglieri (NNAT) - Grade 2 and Grade 5
Each year, around this time, students in our district are administered a cognitive ability test in accordance with Ohio Administrative Code 3301-51-15.
Students in grades 2 and 5 will take the Naglieri Nonverbal Abilities Test (NNAT) assessment during the month of November, and results are expected to be shared with families in December. Our grade 2 students will take this assessment on November 5 and our grade 5 students will take this assessment on November 12.
This is a standardized test given to many students across the country that measures reasoning abilities. The results of this test provides families and teachers with information that can be added to the overall classroom picture/profile of students’ ability, thereby helping to inform instructional decisions.
Letters went home with all 2nd and 5th grade students this week. For digital letters, see below.

James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece... and a rare modern classic. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching.
he story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. One of Sondheim's most popular works, Into the Woods is a wonderful show that features student driven choreography, projections, design, and performances.
