Springdale Public Schools has named Karen Johnson as the incoming principal of Hellstern Middle School.

"I’m honored and thrilled to be joining the outstanding administration team and exceptional staff at Hellstern as principal," said Johnson. "This school has a strong reputation for excellence, and it’s clear that a powerful culture of high expectations, student-centered learning, and collaborative learning is already in place. I’m excited to build on that foundation — to learn alongside the Hellstern Heroes, celebrate their successes, and support continued growth for every student and educator. I look forward to working with staff, students, and families to ensure that Hellstern continues to be a place where all learners thrive."

Johnson is transitioning from Southwest Junior High, where she served as an assistant principal for seven years. She has 20 years of experience in education.

"Karen Johnson is a highly effective administrator who is well-prepared to lead Hellstern Middle School with excellence," said Superintendent, Dr. Jared Cleveland. "Her strong background in instructional practices and curriculum equips her to support both students and teachers at the highest level. With her leadership, the tradition of success and innovation that Hellstern is known for will continue to thrive."

Johnson said she embraces Hellstern's mission to grow, innovate, and celebrate the success of every learner.

"I bring with me a deep passion for cultivating learner agency and elevating student voice—both of which are essential in empowering students to take ownership of their learning," said Johnson. "I look forward to contributing fresh ideas while honoring the strong student-centered culture and exceptional work already in place."

Johnson holds a Masters in Middle Level Education from the University of Arkansas, a Masters in Reading from Harding University, a Masters in Curriculum & Instruction from Western Governors University, and a Specialist in Instructional Leadership from Arkansas State University.

"I am deeply appreciative to Dr. Cleveland, Dr. Smith, Mrs. Tisher, Mrs. Fink and the leadership team for providing me this opportunity," Johnson said. "I am ready to get to work!"

In her free time Johnson loves supporting her kids, Emerie, Jevin and Zane, in all of their sports. I also love to read and jog on the beautiful running trails in NWA.
