The Principal's Corner

Dear Tuscumbia School Community,

I can’t believe today is the last day of February! With the number of days we have missed due to snow, March has really snuck up on me. As much as I love a good snow, I absolutely LOVED the warmer weather this week. I hope you have, too!

I know we just got back to school, but next Friday is the end of 3rd quarter. Please note that teachers may not have a lot of grades for this quarter with how much we have been out of school. What grades they do have will be updated over the next week. While teachers should be reaching out to you with student concerns and updates on what is going on in class, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your student’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns you would like to discuss.

Our next parent/teacher conference date is scheduled for Thursday, March 13. Mrs. Bryan is currently working on a signup page for time slots like we had in the fall, except this time it will be one link that has tabs at the bottom listing each teacher. This will allow parents to sign up for time slots with one link instead of multiple teacher links. As soon as this has been set up it will be shared with parents. Be on the lookout for that sometime this week.

We have several exciting things coming up this month, so make sure to mark your calendars for the following events:

  • March 4: BeAlert Parent Meeting

  • March 7: Early Release / End of 3rd Quarter

  • March 9: Daylight Savings Time

  • March 10 - 13: Scholastic Book Fair

  • March 13: Parent/Teacher Conferences

  • March 14: No School

  • March 14: Fish Fry & Labor Auction

  • March 17: No School

  • March 27: Spring Pictures

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Dr. Kirtley

Principal

Information for Getting a CDL to Drive a Bus

The process for getting a CDL is not difficult, and we will help you! Here is what you need to do:

  • Take the written portion of the exam. Here is the study guide. You can get a printed copy at any testing site. You will need to take the test for School Bus, Class B with passengers. You do NOT need to test for air brakes.
  • After you pass all portions, take the paper the testing site gives you to the license office and get your permit. You also have to take 2 forms of proof-of-residency and a photo ID.
  • Come see us--James Luttrell is our federally approved site trainer, and he will provide your training to take the pre-check and driving portions of the test. He will also take you to the testing site when you take the test. Before he does that, we will need you to complete an application and get a fingerprint background check to ensure you are eligible to work for the district.
  • After you pass your test, you will take your paperwork to the license office again with 2 forms of proof-of-residency and a photo ID and get your CDL.
  • Keep all of your receipts--we reimburse for the permit, CDL, and fingerprints, and we pay for the drug testing and physical.
  • As soon as you have a CDL, are approved by the Board, have a DOT physical, and pass a pre-employment drug test, you can sub bus routes and/or drive activity trips.

Are you interested in becoming a substitute teacher?

If you are interested in becoming a substitute teacher and you do not have the required 36 college hours, you can do an online course that will allow you to get a substitute certificate. Here is the link to that course, and here is the link to the DESE web page that gives you more information about what you need to do to get a substitute certification. Our daily rate for subs for the 2024-25 school year will be $100/day!
