Student Guide to Online Safety & Privacy

When you use tech to play games, watch videos, or use apps for school, companies collect a lot of your information. Keeping your personal information safe online is a team effort!

Follow these simple rules whenever you set up profiles on apps, games, social media, or internet-enabled toys to keep your account safe and your data private.

Master Your Passwords & Usernames

  • Make them long and unique: Strong passwords are hard for others to guess. Use 8 or more letters and characters.

  • Use a random mix: Combine uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid recognizable words.

  • Skip personal info: Never use personal details like your name, phone number, birthday, or address in your username or password. Always pick appropriate, inoffensive usernames.

  • Share only with trusted adults: Sharing passwords with friends can be risky. Only share them with a parent or caregiver—they can help you recover your password if you forget it.

  • Keep them safe: Consider using a password manager to store your passwords safely.

  • Update them regularly: Change your passwords often so that if someone guesses one, they won't have access to your account for long.

Account & Website Security

  • Check the URL (Web Link): Look at the website address before and after you sign in. Make sure it starts with https://. That extra "s" stands for secure!

  • Beware of dangerous downloads: Spyware, malware, and other harmful software can hide inside regular downloads or links. Stick to trusted sources and consider using antivirus software and apps to keep your devices safe.

  • Test password recovery: A safe website will send a link asking you to create a brand-new password instead of displaying your old password or sending it in an email.

Protect Your Personal Information

  • Use strict privacy settings: Adjust your settings so your posts, content, and messages are only shared with trusted people. Opt out of sharing your location and data whenever possible.

  • Skip non-mandatory fields: When filling out online forms or creating a profile, skip any non-mandatory fields. If you don't need to give certain personal information, don't offer it!

  • Ask before you fill: Always ask a parent for help before filling out forms online. Keep identifiable details private, including your:

    • Phone number

    • Birthday

    • Home address

    • Social Security number
