Put some events on your calendar!
From the Principal's Desk:
Dear Salisbury Families:
Grey skies over Salisbury Community School let us know that it is November, the cloudiest month of the year here in Vermont. The year is moving quickly, and it was exciting to get some snow this week! (Well, for kids, anyway). I will admit that I didn't think there was enough to play in, but kids can make it work, and we ended up with lots of large snowballs in the yard, with some stacked like basic snow-people. We'll be making the real thing soon enough!
As fast as the year seems to be going, it will move even more quickly over the next two months, with holidays and vacations and what-not on the calendar. With that in mind, I want to put two events on your radar. They are both going to be pretty fun, and I'm hoping as a community we can work together to make these events pretty big and meaningful.
The first will be "FOSCS Bingo Night", with dinner first, and with raffles for other prizes. We will be holding this here at school on the evening of Friday, December 8th. We're going to have dinner start seating around 5:30, with Bingo starting around 6:15 or so. We'll play until 7: 30, and then see if anyone wants to play any longer! 25 cents per cards per round, and the winner of each round chooses from a batch of prizes including toys, small games, and gift cards to local businesses. FOSCS will also be raffling off other donated prizes, such as a family pack of 4 to Jay Peak's "Pumphouse" Waterpark, $50 off at County Tire, and more. Bingo night, and the dinner before it, is a fundraiser for Friends of Salisbury Community School. All proceeds go to Salisbury Community School student activities.
The second event is the Holiday Dollar Store! This is probably THE most beloved event of the year for the students, and I think it is an awesome way to bridge the school and the community. If you don't know how it works, let me explain: for the next month or so people from the community (hopefully many of you reading this!) will donate items that make nice small gifts for winter holidays. We collect these, along with getting wrapping paper and gift bags, and we hold a special day right before winter break where each student goes into our store and selects 5 gifts, each for a different person in their family, or who is important to them. Each gift costs a dollar each (that's why it's the "Holiday Dollar Store"), but we want every student to take part, so we will cover the $5 for any student that needs it. We always check in with students before the store, but please reach out to me if we can help with the store cost.
Hopefully these things sound fun, but we can use your help. Here's how you can:
1. Come to Bingo Night!
2. Donate small items (for kids or adults!) to the Holiday Dollar Store. Just drop them off with Donna!
3. If you have any connection to local businesses, maybe ask if they'd be willing to donate to our raffle items or our game prizes for Bingo Night. Gift Certificates and small items are greatly appreciated. Salisbury School can provide a receipt of donation if any potential donors need one for tax purposes. We appreciate the businesses, and individuals, who have generously donated to our fundraising efforts.
4. I say it again: Come to Bingo Night, and bring friends! And eat dinner with us first!

This is getting a little long- so much to say!
Have a great week,

A Few Messages From Salisbury Community School
Boots for outside, shoes for inside!
As the snow last week reminded us- it gets wet, muddy, and snowy out there, and it's really easy to track all of that mess into school. Now that it is getting colder, please send your child to school with a pair of shoes to be worn inside (sneakers work best, really, because they are so versatile) and a pair of boots for outside. This keeps floors dry and safe for everyone to walk on, and keeps our school in much better shape. If you need any help finding boots or shoes, please reach out to us- we have some options to help. Thank you!
A Message from our School-Based Clinician Vicky Wideman:
Greetings Salisbury Families,
My name is Vicky Wideman, and I am your CSAC School Based Clinician. Although many of you know me already, I wanted to take a minute to share what I do here at Salisbury Community School. I meet with a set caseload of students for counseling services on a regular basis. I also spend time with other students in groups at lunch and recess. These times are for building peer connections and having fun together in a non-therapeutic way. We do things like arts and crafts, play games in the gym, and enjoy each other's company during lunch. Occasionally, I may be asked to provide support for an individual student who is having a hard day or help a small group of students solve a problem. If you would prefer that I not engage with your child in any of the above ways, please let Mr. Sears know. It is such a pleasure getting to know your children and be part of the Salisbury Community School!

Southern Vermont Natural History Museum visits!
On Friday our whole school was treated to a visit by Michael Clough of the Southern Vermont Natural History Museum! Our 2/3 teacher Jenn Larocque and 2/3 Student Teacher Liza Obel-Omia arranged the visit as part of their classroom work, where the 2/3 students are creating their very own natural history museum focused on fossils. Our students clearly enjoyed learning about wildlife of Vermont, and seeing (and sometimes touching!) a barred owl, a very large rat snake, an opossum, and more up close and personally. Thank you Michael, Jenn, and Liza!
