BHS PTO Meeting Information - Tuesday, October 14th
The next PTO Meeting will be on Tuesday, October 14th @ 7:30 am in Main Office Conference Room. All are welcome!
BHS PTO is an active part of our students' overall high school experience. In addition to others, the BHS PTO proudly supports the following activities throughout the school year: Registration, educational student assemblies, Academic Letter and Academic Letter Lunches, the Academic Wall, Freshmen class activities, staff appreciation events, financial support for student-run after school clubs and organizations, and the Senior Picnic.
Picture Retake Day - New Location
As a reminder, Picture Retake Day is on Tuesday of this week. The room location has been changed to Room B1. We use these pictures for the yearbook and to print a new BHS Student ID. With this in mind, if a student did not get their picture taken at Registration, they should plan to get their picture taken on Tuesday, even if no pictures will be purchased.
For students getting their pictures taken/re-taken, we will be making announcements over the PA system letting them know when to come down (alphabetically by last name).
Pictures can be ordered online. If you have not ordered school pictures yet and would still like to do so, you still can! You do, however, need a new, student-specific code. Please reach out to Amie Konieczny (konieca@brightonk12.com) or Matt Evans (evansm@brightonk12.com) via email to obtain your student's code.
Upcoming Senior Meeting Reminder - Wednesday, October 22nd
Tutoring Options at BHS
National Honor Society's After School Tutoring is underway! If your student is in need of extra help, we encourage them to reach out to the teacher first, as they will be the best resource, but have shared this option with them as well, so please feel free to do the same. NHS students will be available to tutor students in room B-1 from 2:30-3:30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tutoring is free of charge. For more information about after school tutoring or for a list of NHS students who are willing to tutor, go to https://bit.ly/BrightonNHSTutoring Please note: our after school tutor will leave at 2:45 if no students have arrived by then.
In addition to After School Tutoring, we have another tutoring resource available for our students. Every year, the BHS Counseling Office generates a list of adult tutors that can be shared with students and families as an additional option if After School Tutoring doesn't work for them for any reason. These tutors have reached out and asked to be on our tutoring list as a resource to BHS students and families. They have self-reported their qualifications. All adults who are not BAS teachers have passed a background check. It is the responsibility of the students and families to find the best tutor for them, arrange meetings, and make payment.
The 2025-26 Tutor List can be found here.
Parent Teacher Conference Information - Dates and Sign Up Included
As in years past, there will be two days of parent teacher conferences this year, one of which will be in person and one of which will be virtual. As a reminder, virtual parent teacher conferences need to be held on site. Date and time information is provided below:

Teacher Appreciation Parent/Teacher Conference Dinner Sign Up - Donations Needed

The PTO will be hosting a dinner for BHS Staff during conferences on October 23, 2025. If you would like to contribute, please review the available slots on the Sign-Up Genius and click on the button to sign up. Please indicate in your sign up what type of soup and/or salad you will be bringing so we can avoid duplicates. A few vegetarian and gluten free options would be wonderful!

Please drop all non-perishable items in the HS Main Office by Wednesday, Oct. 22, so we can take inventory and get all the drinks refrigerated.
Thank you!

OK2SAY Presentation Information
Some of you may be familiar with OK2Say, but if you are not familiar with the OK2Say Tip Line or the additional resources they provide, we have a number of resources to share. Please see the information below that was shared with our 9th grade students.
On 10/1/25, our 9th grade students listened and engaged in an OK2SAY presentation. OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harmful or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
While the presentation is not recorded, they do offer several resources for families.
- Parental Guide to OK2SAY
- A Parent's Guide to Understanding Threats
- Online Resources
- Online Discussion Questions and Action Plan
- Bullying: How Parents Can Help
- Holding on to Life Toolkit
We realize that this information is sensitive in nature, but we believe it is important to help support our students. OK2SAY can be contacted by:
- By Phone: Call 1-8-555-OK2SAY (1-8-555-652729) to speak with a trained technician.
- By Text: Text 652729 (OK2SAY) to submit a tip.
- By Email: Send an email to okaytosay@mi.gov.
- By Mobile App: Download the OK2SAY app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Online: Visit the OK2SAY website and use the confidential online tip form at ok2say.state.mi.us.
If students have any safety concerns, they are encouraged to contact their Grade-Level Principal, our School Resource Officer, or a staff member. We believe in “See Something, Say Something”, and are here to help our students feel safe.
Powerlifting Coach Update - Coach Still Needed
We have been getting a few questions around the BHS Powerlifting Team. Please see the information below:
We are still in need of a club advisor/coach for the BHS Powerlifting Team! A more formal description of responsibilities can be provided upon request, but the identified items below cover the largest items on the list:
- Competitions on Saturdays, including State Meets
- Setting practice schedules with Coach Mayo (typically 3 days/week from early Nov. - early March)
- Writing and distributing lifting programs to athletes
- Navigating the administrative side of getting into meets and communicating with the Michigan High School Powerlifting Association
With it being a club, the practice schedule can be whatever anyone needs it to be, as long as it fits with Coach Mayo’s training schedule. Any meets will be on Saturdays across the state. There is a process to apply into the meets, but the MHSPLA gives out that information to new coaches at the beginning of every year. Additional guidance from the team's previous coach at least to get started can potentially be coordinated.
If interested, or if you have any questions, please contact Matt Evans (evansm@brightonk12.com) and we will do the best we can to get them answered for you.

We will be hosting Career Chats this year during Advisory and could use your help. If you, or anyone you know, may be interested in connecting our students with more information on potential career opportunities, we would love it if you could review the information below or share the following information with anyone who may be interested!
Brighton High School is looking for community partners!
We are seeking volunteer presenters to share their careers and experiences with students during our 2025-26 Career Pathways Presentations. Our "Career Chats", previously known as Lunch N Learns, are a great opportunity to inspire the next generation and help students explore future career options.

October is Michigan College Month!
Michigan College Month is part of the American College Application Campaign, a national initiative with the goal to provide every graduating high school senior the opportunity to apply to college and for financial aid. Special focus is placed on assisting students who would be the first in their families to attend college and students who may not have otherwise seriously considered applying to college. Michigan College Month emphasizes the relationship between applying to and paying for college and helps break down some of the most complex and commonly cited barriers to attending college.
We will have different events going on in October in promotion of Michigan College Month, but also have some resources to share as well. In addition to the student resources already linked, additional resources on fee-free applications/application fee waivers are provided below:
AP Test Fee Payment Deadline - Friday, October 31st
This year, if students want to take their AP exam in May, they must register online in AP Classroom and pay for their AP exam in Parent Connect by October 31, 2025. Each exam is $100 unless a student is eligible for reduced fees due to demonstrated financial need. For students or families who feel they qualify for reduced fees, please email Jennifer Napuli (napulij@brightonk12.com), so she can assist with the process.

SAT/ACT Score Comparisons - Should I Submit My Test Score?
When a student is trying to decide whether to submit ACT scores to a particular college, this chart helps give you a comparison to see if it's a good idea. Say a student earned 1180 on their SAT and 27 on their ACT, and they are wondering if it would help them to submit the 27.
By looking at the chart, you can see a 27 is equivalent to 1260-1290, so roughly 100 points higher than their SAT. So yes, in most cases this student would be helped by submitting their ACT score.
The only exception would be if the higher score still isn't super competitive for the school you are applying to, like UM Ann Arbor. In that case, if the score is below what your GPA would predict you to get, it's probably better to not submit any scores.
Class of 2026 Remind Codes - Students Only
In addition to our various social media accounts, one of the ways in which we share important information with the Senior class is through the use of the Remind App. We will share the same information with parents via weekly emails, however, students seem to do a better job receiving the information through Remind. Please help us by encouraging your student(s) to join the correct Remind group using the join codes below (alphabetical by last name):
Last Name A - E: @bhssr26a-e
Last Name F - L: @bhssr26f-l

Brighton Area Schools Student Wellness Information
As a part of the BAS Strategic Plan, we are always trying to find ways to maximize and support student growth. One of many ways we do this is through the Brighton Area Schools App. This app can be downloaded for free on iTunes and Google Play. It is loaded with resources for students and parents. In addition, consider using the "Your Best, Your Growth, Your Future" part of the app to submit a goal and receive 1:1 support and feedback to help you achieve it! The app will also allow you to receive notifications on what is happening throughout BAS and be updated on future events and information.
Weekly Wellness Tip from BAS - "Changing Seasons"

Job Shadow Day Opportunity
BHS, in partnership with Livingston ESA’s Career Development Department, has planned a countywide, bi-annual event, Liv Co Job Shadow Day, from Wednesday, November 5 through Friday, November 7, 2025. This is a one day activity designed to show Juniors and Seniors a bit about what a day in the life of different careers is like. There are many diverse opportunities for students to shadow, ranging from aircraft mechanics to veterinarians to HVAC technicians.
Sign up for students opens on October 15th at 7pm; students can register and sign up on the same day! Registration involves a parent signature to confirm students' permission to participate. Students can preview the website ahead of time to see what Job Shadow Opportunities are available at the Livingston Career Hub. Please note that career availability is on a first come, first served basis, so it would be a good idea to have a list of top five choices. Some careers require extra paperwork, so please check that out ahead of time. Extra forms are attached to the Job Shadow Profile. All extra forms are due to the employer via email by October 29th, or the job shadow will be canceled. The last day to sign up for Job Shadows for students is October 29th, 2025.
Please see your counselors or CTE teachers for more information. It’s a great way to check out different careers to see if it’s the one for you! There are currently 38 employers and over 340 opportunities available!

2025-26 MHSAA Scholar Athlete Scholarship Award
The online application for the 2025-26 Scholar-Athlete Award is now available. Students will fill out the entire application online, which includes applicant background info, short-answer questions, and essays. Judges will also be reviewing and scoring applications online.
Schools are limited to the number of students who will be considered for the award. Class A schools can nominate 6 boys and 6 girls, Class B can nominate 4 boys and 4 girls, Class C can nominate 3 boys and 3 girls and Class D can nominate 2 boys and 2 girls.
To get your students involved, here is what you need to do…
- Direct students to mhsaa.com/scholarship to start the application process.
- Once there, students will create an account.
- Finally, students will need to enter the Access Code provided to you by the MHSAA. WE WILL SEND YOU THIS CODE IN A SEPARATE EMAIL.
At this point, students can start to fill out the different parts of the application. If they leave the application, they will pick up where they left off when they return. Students also need two letters of recommendation. Students can upload PDFs or Word docs themselves, or they can use the system to have recommenders upload recommendations themselves. The deadline is Dec. 5, at 4:00 p.m. Since the process is entirely online, there is no internal school deadline.
- For tips and instructions for students, click here.
- For more information about the Scholar-Athlete Award, click here.
If you have questions contact Paige Winne at the MHSAA: paige@mhsaa.com or 517-332-5046.

The scholarship program is based on academic scholastics, a 90-second performing arts talent routine, physical-fitness routine and interview skills. Last year, $8.5000.00 in college scholarships were awarded at the Michigan program along with college granted scholarships around the United States. Participants can earn scholarships based on each category – scholastics, physical fitness routine, interview, performing arts talent, and self-expression. The winner of the Distinguished Young Woman of Michigan program will go on to the Distinguished Young Women of America National Scholarship Program in Mobile, Alabama in June 2026 for the opportunity to earn college-granted scholarships and additional scholarship money.
Last year’s state winner, Calista Elkins from Oakland County, Michigan, earned $3,450.00 in college scholarships at the state program and earned an additional $2,000.00 at the national scholarship program as an overall talent and fitness winner, totaling $5,450.00. Calista is using her college scholarships at the University of Michigan studying nursing.
The Michigan scholarship program is scheduled for January 24, 2026 in Westland, Michigan. If you would like more information on this scholarship program, you can go to www.distinguishedyw.org.
