Trailblazer Talk
September 2025
Hi Trailblazer Family!
We are so excited to have kiddos back in the building! It's been a really good start to the new school year at SCE. Students and staff are loving the updated feel of the building; it's so much brighter and welcoming.
SCE received an "A" rating by TEA and earned 5 distinction designations! This is the result of how hard our students are staffed worked last year focusing on goals, grit and growth. We are so incredibly proud! Our plan is to continue this work this school year and beyond.
Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you for all that you do to make SCE the best place to be!
Kids Have to Be Present at School to Learn
DID YOU KNOW?
• Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
• Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read. Kids who miss too much school in PreK & K are less likely to be reading by 3rd grade.
• Students can still fall behind if they miss just one or two days every few weeks.
• Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
• Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college!
Attendance Matters ⏰
Texas law requires students to be in attendance at least 90% of the time in order to receive credit for the semester.
Attendance can be a better predictor of whether students will graduate from high school than test scores.
Students in kindergarten and 1st grade who are chronically absent will not likely read at grade level by the 3rd grade.
Texas is one of the few states in the country that funds its schools using average daily attendance.
Texas law requires students ages 6-19 to attend school each day that instruction is provided. This also applies to students who are younger than six and have previously been enrolled in 1st grade and to students younger than six who are voluntarily enrolled in pre-kindergarten or kindergarten.
Attendance also effects school distinction designations.
Enrollment Forms Update – Action Required by August 31
Recent changes to state law require school districts to collect additional parent notification and consent forms each year. To meet these requirements and keep our records up to date, we are asking all families to complete updates to enrollment forms for the 2025–26 school year.
These forms cover health-related services, counseling services, and an overview of student discipline. You can find them in Skyward Family Access under “25-26 Parent Notification Forms.” The updates will need to be submitted for each student enrolled in MISD.
Please take a few minutes to complete them by August 31, 2025.
If you have any questions, please contact us at your convenience.
Thank you for partnering with us to ensure a smooth start to the school year!
