Dear Mary Hogan Families,

Communities are more resilient the more connections that we have with one another. Here at Mary Hogan, we work hard to have lots of connections across our community - with families, volunteers, as well as many organizations. We learn from these connections and work to help others. We also have really generous community members who are always looking out for us here. I just wanted to highlight two connections that made the week a bit more special:

  • The Middlebury Fire Department helps keep us safe at school. They also helped all of our students this week when they came to teach them about fire safety - and to show them the equipment they use in their work!
  • The Residence at Otter Creek dropped off a big box of drawing materials, ziplock bags, and more that we will use throughout the fall and will help students. We are so grateful to the residents who are looking out for Mary Hogan students and working to make their days even brighter!

Be well,

Jen

October Update from the Library October Update from the Library

In the library, students have been learning about different reading challenges that they can participate in. The 4th and 5th graders are encouraged to try at least five books from the Vermont Golden Dome Book list. The 2nd and 3rd graders were introduced to the Midd Reads book challenge. This is a list of 24 books and we ask kids to try and read 15 new titles from the list. The books for the challenges are on special shelves in the Mary Hogan and at the Ilsley Library. Students may listen to the audiobooks or read the books. We hold a special celebration in May to recognize the students who participate. K-1 students will begin reading Red Clover books with Miss Julie in October!

Hola estimadas familias:

In Spanish class, students are practicing routines in the classroom to be kind and safe. They are learning to “Share the Planet” and take care of it. Therefore, students learn how to describe themselves as: Soy respetuoso, soy responsable, soy amable y soy entusiasta. We also celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and you can go to my website at MHS for stories, recipes, geography, songs, videos and more.

Con cariño,

Señora Jiménez

Unifix Cubes in 2nd Grade Math Unifix Cubes in 2nd Grade Math

Students in 2nd grade are working on counting by 10s and developing their sense of how to represent numbers in different ways with unifix cubes. In math this week, students were counting by 10s, considering how to represent a large number of groups in 100s and 10s, as well as how to show 45 in different ways with unifix cubes. While this is just part of their math thinking, it helps students develop fluidity and flexibility in their math thinking and number sense.

On our last Walk and Roll Day, teachers counted how many students walked, rolled, carpooled, or rode the bus in each class. This information went to the Middlebury Safe Routes team and they determined which class had the highest percentage of students who participated in Walk and Roll Day. Kate Conklin's 4th grade class claimed the victory this fall and got the Muddy Boot Award.

We will do this again in the spring and I can't wait to see if they are able to defend their title or if another class will win.

Fire Safety Day Fire Safety Day

We were so fortunate to have all students meet with our local Middlebury Fire Department members and learn about fire safety this week. They got to learn about the equipment the fire department uses too.

The best part was meeting the firefighters, including 2 Mary Hogan teachers - Miss Karissa and Delaynah - and parents! We are so grateful for our local volunteer fire fighters, who help to keep us safe and help us learn about keeping ourselves safe from fire.

Dots and Stripes Dots and Stripes

Preschool chose this month's spirit day and it was dots and stripes. We had many, many students and staff participating with dots, stripes, or dots and stripes!
