Tumuaki Talk
Kia ora e te whānau,
The school holidays are upon us after a very busy term. This is a chance to review and recap the final few days and weeks of Term 3 before looking toward a really full Term 4.
This edition of the Porritt School Press features an update around our 50th Jubilee and the industrial action that will impact one of our planned events.
Porritt School will be closed for instruction on Thursday 23 October as teachers, support staff and principals in primary schools and intermediate schools strike across the country.
Our 50th Jubilee Celebration event in the evening at Napier Old Boys Marist Rugby Club will go ahead as planned for those registered to attend.
We also have our Teacher-Only Day on Tuesday 28 October, so your child will be away from school for a period of six days in late October. We cannot reorganise this event as our MOE facilitator, venue and professional development that day is pre-booked with no ability for us to reschedule. However, Porritt Care is open for enrolled tamariki.
I understand this time away from school is not ideal for all. I empathise with our working families trying to navigate this industrial action. I myself, as a parent of a high school student that has been affected by secondary school strikes, understand the impact on the normal rhythms for whānau.
I am personally and professionally concerned for the sector as resourcing and support for our learners continues to be an increasing challenge, and numbers of experienced teachers departing or retiring grows, paired with the dwindling numbers of new teachers entering the profession.
I also cite the degradation in the commitment to honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi through central government decision making that has impacted education as well.
These are extraordinary times for the education sector as all three groups within the union strive for a positive shift for our tamariki and for the profession. Thank you for your support and understanding.
We are excited about the term to come! We are working hard in this non-contact time for what is ahead in Term 4. What an action-packed time and significant time it is going to be.
Ngā mihi whakamiha - respectful regards,
Maaka Papuni - Tumuaki/Principal
Our senior performance kapa haka represented our kura with pride and distinction this time last week at the Ahuriri Kāhui Ako Kapa Haka Festival. It was an awesome day of beautiful performances from kura and kindergarten across our area.

HB Regional Cross Country Success!
A huge congratulations to Sienna Kura and Rikki Towler who both placed in the top 20 at the recent Napier Schools Cross Country. This fantastic achievement means they qualified for the Hawke’s Bay Cross Country, where they competed against the best runners from across Napier and Hastings. Sienna placed 20th in a strong field of 60 runners, while Rikki put in an outstanding performance, placing 3rd out of 70. Ka pai tō mahi kōrua Sienna and Rikki! Awesome running!
Senior Touch Team Compete Hard!
Our Porritt Touch Team did us proud at the recent Ahuriri Schools Mixed Touch Tournament. They played with fantastic teamwork and determination, finishing 4th overall after a close loss to Taradale in the semifinal. The team showed great sportsmanship throughout the day and should be very proud of their efforts, an awesome result for our kura!

Snapshot on Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori – He Tau Whakanui i te Reo, He Tau Whakanui i a Tātou!
Last week our kura was alive with the sounds of te reo Māori, as we joined together to celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. How fitting that in the year we mark 50 years as a kura, we also celebrate 50 years of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.
Our kura has been flooded with reo as our kaiako and Māori cultural leaders handed out ‘Rawe Te Reo’ tokens to tamariki using their reo. Each day, tokens were gathered and prizes drawn, a small but powerful way to show that every word spoken in te reo is worth celebrating. At the same time, Kōkiri (our reo rua) gifted us all with a new kīwaha / phrase of the day, through our school notices, helping the reo roll more naturally off our tongues.
Across the kura, the richness of Te Ao Māori was everywhere. Tamariki explored Te Ao Māori inspired art, created with passion and pride, while laughter and friendly competition filled the air through Te Reo Māori Kahoots. Our fields and courts came alive with traditional kēmu Māori and hākinakina, classrooms echoed with the wisdom and wonder of pūrākau being shared, and the uplifting sounds of Māori waiata drifted through our spaces. All of this was underpinned by the strength of tuakana–teina, with our older tamariki guiding, encouraging, and celebrating alongside their younger peers.
He taonga tuku iho te reo Māori — a treasure handed down to us. Last week has been a reminder that when we speak, sing, play, and create through te reo, we are helping to carry that taonga forward.
“Ko te reo te mauri o te mana Māori – The language is the life force of Māori identity.”
Kōkiri Deliver a Porritt School First!
Last Friday in our final assembly of the term, Kōkiri were our hosts. Kōkiri is our reo rua/bilingual learning space. The tamariki in Kōkiri are in Year 4-6
These tamariki, along with their pouako Matua Ben, and pouawhina Whaea Bernie, delivered a Porritt School first - an entire assembly delivered entirely in te reo Māori. Kōkiri began with karakia, the mōteatea Te Pepeha o Tamatea Pōkai Whenua, and mihimihi. We then enjoyed being introduced into the different parts of our normal assembly structure by our hosts using te reo Māori alone.
What a special way to cap off Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori - ka nui te mihi Kōkiri!
Porritt School Board Elections Summary
Our new Porritt School Board meets for the first time on Wednesday 15 October following our first Porritt School Board election process for some time. This is a fantastic sign of an engaged community.
We will be welcoming new members Lee-Ann Grant, Puhiwahine Nepe Apatu and Kane Nepe Apatu.
Our new members join existing parent members Ken Marshall, Kevin Walsh, and Pōhatu Paku, alongside Gail Shine as Staff Representative and Maaka Papuni as Principal member.
Thank you to all of you that cast votes in this election. Another sign of great engagement from our whānau and caregivers.
Acknowledgements to Jo Hayes, our Returning Officer, for her significant work throughout this process.
A final thank you to Rhondda Sweatman, Chris Olsen and Daniel Whyte for your contributions to the board across time. Your effort and input has helped shape our kura in significant ways. Ngā mihi nunui ki a koutou.
School Abuzz with Tradespeople! Holiday Mahi Underway!
Our kura is currently awash with tradespeople and experts catching up on some essential holiday works. We have painting, refurbishment, joinery and flooring and carpet improvements happening this fortnight. Our kura will look great to welcome in the new term and the 50th Jubilee!
Many thanks to Matua Hamish for navigating this and coordinating the different tradespeople on the ground throughout this time.
Here are some updates as we prep for a huge Term 4 ahead...
Matua Ben will be hitting the books in 2026 with a year of Study Leave confirmed. Matua Ben is growing his kete around Te reo Māori me ōna tikanga at EIT next year. All the best for the study Ben!
Ben has also indicated a wish to return to fulltime classroom teaching in 2027, so steps back from his current Deputy Principal leadership role.
We wish to extend our best wishes to Matua Ben for the successful study leave application and learning ahead.
We will also mihi to Ben later on, as the year draws to a close, for the significant leadership he has displayed and the guidance he has provided our staff, particularly in the area of Mathematics and assessment practice. Kia ora Matua!

Industrial Action Ahead - Porritt School Closed on Thursday 23 October
NZEI Primary Teachers, Support Staff and Principal's Union Votes to Strike
Across the past month, all NZEI Union members across the country - teachers, support staff have been engaged in consultation around the negotiations with the Ministry of Education.
Ultimately, across all three groups nationwide, the offers that have come to some of these groups have been rejected and the votes taken around industrial action having been clear - this action will go ahead. Education joins the Health sector and the Professional Firefighters Union in taking this action.
Porritt School will be closed for instruction on Thursday 23 October.
We understand this is disruptive for our whānau and caregivers. In fact, it lands inconveniently during the week of our 50th Jubilee. Having said that, this action is designed to be disruptive in order to resume negotiations with the MOE.
As a sector, we as teachers, support staff and principals have identified through the NZEI Te Riu Roa union, a wish to focus our claims on;
- Increased resourcing in classrooms across the country with a focus on learning support and teacher aide time
- A focus on honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi in our kura nationwide from an MOE perspective
- Improved conditions for all staff in kura nationwide to address the cost of living increases, and as our teaching population ages, to ensure teaching can attract a viable workforce in the future.
We'll continue to update our whānau and caregivers here at Porritt School, and appreciate any support from our community.
Details about our re-organised Jubilee Celebrations are below.
Porritt School Birthday Party for Tamariki on Thursday 23 October - Postponed!
The show must go on! The birthday party will go ahead later in Term 4!
Our Porritt School Birthday Party will now take place in Week 5 of next term on Friday 7 November. This is a day of fun and celebration for our tamariki.
As a staff, we are really looking forward to marking this day with our tamariki.
A huge mihi to our Home and School group for agreeing to fund this amazing celebration for our kids on Friday 7 November.
More details to follow.
Reminder: Teacher Only Day Tuesday 28 October
We will be closed for instruction on Tuesday 28 October for a Teacher-Only Day. This is the second of our Ministry of Education-required NZ Curriculum professional development days for 2025. We will be focused on the shifts and changes in the English and Mathematics curriculum areas.
We understand this Teacher-Only Day is now book-ended by Industrial Action on Thursday 23 October, but we have booked professional learning, a venue and an MOE facilitator on this day, so this will go ahead as planned as a Ministry of Education requirement.
We appreciate your support here as we grow our knowledge and understanding through these changes.
