WITF Spelling Bee

On Saturday, March 18th, 35 spellers from 29 different schools and 11 counties in the area advanced to the WITF Central PA televised spelling bee. This elite group included two of our NMS students---Joel Artman and Elyse Hock.

Both students represented our school and district well, and we are very proud of them! In the end, sixth grader Elyse Hock won 3rd place overall in the bee. Congratulations, Elyse!

Below is a photo of her with a smile and a “sweet” prize.

NMS THON Leadership Team

Last Wednesday, the NMS Mini-THON Leadership Team had a unique opportunity to see their fundraising efforts in action when they toured the Penn State Children’s Hospital. Although touring a hospital is a somber event, it was awesome to hear about Four Diamonds’ efforts to make a difference in the treatment for a child diagnosed with cancer. They include: dedicated social workers; music, pet, and art therapy; vouchers for families for food and gas; all medical bills covered; and most important, research for a cure. Seeing all of this in action, the Overall Leaders came back to NMS more emboldened than ever to make Mini-THON 2023 as successful as it can be!

National FFA Officer Makes an Impact on Local Students in Agriculture

It isn’t every day that a school gets to welcome a National FFA Officer into its program.

On Thursday, March 23 Northern York High School Agriculture Education Program was honored to host a National FFA Officer, MacKenna Clifton, the Southern Region Vice-President along with Pennsylvania FFA State Secretary Grace Benton, State Treasurer Callie Whiting, and State Reporter Jeremy Rose. Each year, the National FFA Officers travel across the country to different states across the nation to engage in an educational experience for all agricultural education students and FFA members. A chapter visit is an opportunity for students to participate in an interactive workshop to learn more about themselves and agricultural education.

There was representation from nearly 40 students across three schools in the area including Northern York High School, Dover Area High School, and Red Lion Area High School. The students gathered to participate in a variety of leadership-based workshops facilitated by the National and State FFA Officers.

Students at this event connected with leaders of the National FFA Organization through this unique opportunity. The National FFA Officer chapter visit also allowed members to have a question-and-answer session where they had one-on-one time to get to know the State and National FFA Officers. They were able to engage in valuable conversations about agriculture and FFA. A student and Gifford Pinchot FFA chapter officer, Kiera Mull, stated “Meeting Mackenna, the National FFA Officer, allowed me to learn about leadership, communication, and teamwork. It was amazing to meet her and listen to her journey in agriculture and FFA. I truly felt her passion for FFA and how she is an advocate for agriculture”.

This was a day filled with growth and excitement and one that our students will remember for years to come. We want to thank Mr. Michael Brammer, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania FFA Association and the National FFA Organization for providing this experience for students across York County, Pennsylvania. Pictured is the Gifford Pinchot FFA Officer Team pictured with the National FFA Officer.

FFA News

On March 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th members from the Gifford Pinchot FFA (pictured below) went to Northern, South Mountain, Dillsburg, and Wellsville Elementary Schools where they read to students in kindergarten through second grade for Ag Literacy Week.

On March 23rd, members of Gifford Pinchot FFA competed in the Area level of public speaking. Penelope Brosius placed first in the Senior Prepared Contest. She will now move to the Regional Contest in April at Greenwood High School. Way to go Penelope! We are Polar Bear proud!

On March 26th through the 28th, 9 of the Gifford Pinchot FFA officers (pictured below) attended the State Legislative Leadership Conference (SLLC) in Harrisburg at the Sheraton Hotel. At this conference, they learned proper dinner etiquette, the meaning of advocacy, parliamentary procedure, and how the legislative process works.

NMS Career Day

On March 14th Northern Middle School held a career day for 7th and 8th grade students. Students rotated in groups through 3 different careers, where they were able to spend 25 minutes hearing from each speaker. In their career sessions they learned about a typical day in the life of that career, the education and training needed, and a Q and A at the end. We had 11 parent and community volunteers who came in to speak to students about their career. The careers represented in our career day included farming, microbiology, law, construction, multimedia, graphic design, law enforcement, physician assistant, mortgage lending, cyber security, and military. The speakers did a great job engaging the students and exposing them to different career options!
