February 15, 2024

Students have just finished up step 7 of the Wilson Reading program (working with advanced sounds, soft g, softc, dge, tch, ph, tion, sion, and contractions). Students will begin working with step 8 words, sounds, and concepts (r-controlled syllables) when we return from vacation.

Students have been focusing on reading articles and short stories about characters/people. They have worked to identify how these characters/people feel by identifying the things they say, do, and think. Student have then been examining how people, places, and events influence how people/characters change throughout the passages. Students will continue to explore this topic when we return from vacation.

Students have also been learning about vocabulary strategies such as context clues. They have been working on reading passages with unfamiliar words and using context clues to ask themselves, "what do I know about the topic?", "what makes sense?" in order to make educated guess about the meaning of unfamiliar words within text. This skills will continue to worked on through the month of February.

During our weekly long block students continue to build their independent reading stamina, by reading narrative and informational texts and reflecting on their reading by "Asking Questions," "Making Predictions," "Making a Connection," "Summarizing", "Setting Effect", "Characterization", "Identifying Text Features" and "Main Idea/Details" .

Google Classroom and Powerschool

Google Classroom is used in my class as a way to share assignments and for students to turn in assignments. I also share resources and electronic activities on Google Classroom. When I am absent I will use Google Classroom to share my expectations for class that day and assignments to be worked on while I'm absent. I do not give grades to assignments on Google Classroom.

Grades for assignments and messages about retakes are posted to powerschool. Please reach out if you have a question about an assignment or any other grade related query.

Meet Ms. Sorenson

My name is Christine Sorenson and this is my 17th year teaching at WMS. I live with my husband, our twelve-year-old daughter, our eight-year-old son, a Papillon pup named Moose, and my mother. A lot of our time is spent outside, enjoying swimming and playing sports. I’m an avid reader and enjoy reading a good suspense thriller. I am a third-generation teacher. My grandmother and mother were both teachers in Boston. I'm excited for the new year ahead!
