Calculated Excellence: WSD 4th Graders Sweep Math is Cool Regional Championships

On a snowy March 13, something impressive was happening inside Foothills Middle School β€” fourth graders from across Wenatchee School District were competing at the highest level, proving that a little winter weather is no match for a motivated mathematician.

All WSD elementary schools were represented at the 4th Grade Math is Cool Regional Championships, the first opportunity for students to participate in this prestigious academic competition. More than 280 students from 25 North Central Washington schools competed across three divisions β€” Phi (Ο†), E, and Pi (Ο€). Despite significant weather challenges that pushed one NCW team to an online format in early April, Wenatchee's teams showed up and showed out.

The results speak for themselves.

Team Results

WSD teams competed across all three divisions and brought home top finishes in two of them. In the Phi division, competing against one other team, Sunnyslope Elementary took 1st place and Washington Elementary took 2nd place. In the Pi division, competing against 14 other teams, Valley Academy claimed 1st place β€” a standout result in the largest and most competitive division of the day.

Individual Highlights

Ο† (Phi) Division

  • Geoffrey Eskelin, Sunnyslope β€” 1st place overall and high score for school

  • Wrenly Foster, Washington β€” 2nd place overall and high score for school

  • Eli Bucholz, Washington β€” 3rd place overall

  • Leander Eskelin, Sunnyslope β€” 4th place overall

  • Greyson Cottingham, Washington β€” 5th place overall

  • Jaxon Morris, Washington β€” 6th place overall

  • Andrew Tang, Washington β€” 7th place overall

E Division

  • Mattie Hunsaker, Lincoln β€” 2nd place overall and high score for school

  • Ulysses VanGorder, John Newbery β€” High score for school

A Community of Problem Solvers

Math is Cool is more than a competition β€” it's a celebration of the kind of thinking that opens doors. To every student who competed, every teacher who prepared them, and every family who supported them: this is what unlimited potential looks like in action.

WHS Design Engagement Events and Opportunities

The work of envisioning a future Wenatchee High School is well underway β€” and the voices shaping that work are coming from every corner of our community.

Students Are Leading the Way

This week, members of the Superintendent's Advisory Council (SAC) sat down with the Integrus Architecture team for a hands-on design engagement session. Students explored a physical site model of the WHS property, responded to design concepts across categories including Look & Feel, Learning Space, and Safety & Wellbeing, and shared firsthand what it means to learn in the current building every day.

The architects weren't just presenting to students β€” they were listening to them. That input directly informs the design work moving forward.

Building Tours in Two Languages

At a recent Migrant Family Night, WHS AVID students stepped up as tour guides β€” conducting building tours entirely in Spanish for families from our community. Walking through a building constructed in 1972, students shared their honest experience of learning at WHS: what they love, and the building challenges that affect their learning environment every day.

For many families it connected the dots between what they hear from their students at home and the reality of the building. For others it was a firsthand look at what their children's high school experience will include. The professionalism, heart, and genuine pride these students demonstrated was something to see.

More Opportunities to Get Involved

The community engagement process is just getting started. WSD is committed to making this a conversation that includes every voice β€” not just those who were able to join the Design Advisory Committee.

Upcoming opportunities to see the building, meet the design team, and share your input:

πŸ“… Wednesday, April 15 | 6:00 – 8:00 PM

πŸ“… Sunday, April 26 | 2:00 – 4:00 PM πŸ“ Wenatchee High School

Both sessions include student and volunteer-led building tours that go beyond the gym and auditorium β€” into the learning spaces and infrastructure that tell the full story of a building that has served this community since 1972. The Integrus Architecture team will be present at both sessions to answer questions and collect input.

No RSVP required. All community members are welcome.
