The Dragon Digest
How a Cardinal Impacted Dragons
This week, our Jarrettown students experienced something truly special — and it all started with one remarkable senior from Upper Dublin High School.
Tylar Gundy, a member of the Class of 2026, is open about the fact that reading did not come easily to her when she was younger. She understands firsthand what it feels like to struggle with literacy, to work harder than others just to keep up, and to wonder if reading will ever feel comfortable. But rather than allowing that challenge to define her, Tylar chose to transform it into purpose.
As she grew older, she began thinking about the elementary students who might be feeling the way she once did. She wanted them to see someone who had been in their shoes — someone who could say, “I know it’s hard, but you can do this.” From that vision, Eleliteracy was born. Eleliteracy is Tylar’s student-led initiative designed to promote a love of reading among our youngest learners. Through determination, organization, and an incredible amount of heart, she raised thousands of dollars to ensure that every elementary student in the district would receive a brand-new book of their own. She then recruited more than thirty fellow high school students, facilitated their training, and coordinated visits to all four elementary schools.
This week, Eleliteracy came to life on our campus. High school students arrived ready to serve — reading aloud to classes, talking about the importance of literacy, modeling fluency and expression, and building joyful connections with our children. At the end of each session, they left behind something tangible and lasting: the very book they had just shared, gifted to each child in the class.
The impact was immediate. Our students saw confident, capable readers who weren’t so different from themselves. They saw role models who value learning. And perhaps most importantly, some of them saw proof that struggling with reading is not the end of the story — it can be the beginning.
Tylar is an inspiration to me and to our entire Jarrettown community. She reminds us that challenges can become catalysts, that leadership has no age requirement, and that one person’s courage to share her story can ripple outward to touch hundreds of lives.
I'm grateful for Tylar and grateful for the powerful example she has set. Eleliteracy is more than an event — it is a testament to resilience, compassion, and the belief that every child deserves both the tools and the confidence to become a reader.
