Fall Dance
PBIS will be hosting a Fall Dance Wednesday, October 25th from 3:30-5:30. The cost is $5 per student. Tickets can be purchased online here, or before school. When a "ticket" is purchased, the student's name will go on a list. At the end of the school day on the 25th, Spartan Depart teachers will go over the list and give out wrist bands to students. We look forward to hosting this fun event for our students and making memories!
PBIS
All staff hand out Spartan Tickets to students who are showing Work, Respect, Belong at SMS. They have the opportunity to "spend" their Spartan Tickets at a store that is now open. If you would like to help promote positive behavior at SMS, we have created an Amazon Wish List here. Any donations are appreciated.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. This month, students have been engaging in learning around bully prevention and turning the focus on kindness and community. On October 18th, SMS celebrated Unity Day.
What is Unity Day?
“An event created by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, to come together in one giant ORANGE message of hope and support. WEAR AND SHARE ORANGE to color our nation, and even the world, to visibly show that our society believes no child should ever experience bullying.” (PACER.org)
Unity Day at SMS
On Wednesday, October 18th, students and staff were encouraged to wear orange to show support for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Unity Day was also celebrated during Spartan Start throughout the entire week. Students created posters and learned about how Unity Day was started and why we continue to celebrate it every year. During Spartan Start, students created posters for Unity Day.
Cheesy Challenge
Teachers counted how many students were wearing orange during their Spartan Start class on Unity Day. The class from each grade level who was wearing the most orange won a giant container of cheese balls! See photos of some of the Unity Day activities below.
7th Grade
7th Grade: Mrs. Olson Spartan Start (100% wearing orange)
6th Grade
8th Grade

Volunteers
Anyone (even PTSA members) volunteering during the school day will need to follow the District's volunteer process and complete the background check. If you plan to help out at Superior Middle School, please visit the link below and complete the 2 PART process. If you need assistance with the fee associated with the background check, please email leann.egnash@superior.k12.wi.us and she can help you. We do not want this fee to deter you from making a positive different at our school.
(Completing this process is valid for your help at multiple schools within the Superior School District)
Healthy Minute
A “Healthy Minute” Note from the SMS Health Office
DRINKING ENOUGH WATER!
Hydration is often an overlooked but very important part of EVERY person’s success throughout a day. It helps improve concentration, memory, performance in classrooms and sports, and generally feeling your best. The health office sees a ton of students that have headaches, dizziness, fatigue, etc. and oftentimes kids don't have a water bottle or haven’t drank enough (or any) water in their school day. The health office staff encourages all kids to have a water bottle on hand or in their locker; one or two drinks at a water fountain is not enough to keep you sharp and focused throughout the day. Aim for 6-8 cups of water each day. Also, many fruits and vegetables have a naturally higher amount of water content which is a bonus for hydration and incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your balanced meals. To sum it up: drink more water!! It’s good for your health :)
After School Programs
Intramurals
SMS has built an exciting intramural program this year.
All registration for SMS Intramural sports and clubs is done online using EduTrak. Please go to this site and create an account. Then “shop” for the activity of your choice and add to your basket. You will be prompted to fill out the required registration form, create a payment type and then make your payment. If the activity does not have a fee, your cart will indicate $0.00 due at checkout. It’s as easy as that! Contact Mrs. Bender with any questions.

Food Service
Breakfast and dinner at SMS continue to be free for all students, but lunch is paid. We encourage all families to apply for free and reduced lunch. Even if you are not eligible, your application helps our school. You can apply multiple times throughout the school year, especially if your home situation changes. You can easily add funds into your student's lunch account through My School Bucks.
Attendance Matters!
Contact Ms. Charity at charity.gurovitsch@superior.k12.wi.us with any questions or assistance with attendance needs. Here are some reminders.
PowerSchool
Communication about attendance and grades is a top priority each year at the secondary school level. To help facilitate communication, SMS uses an online grade book called PowerSchool that will continue with your child through high school. A PowerSchool parent account will allow you to check your student's progress in school including grades, lunch balance, as well as their attendance. If you need assistance with setting up your Parent Portal in PowerSchool, or need to reset your password, send Ms. Charity an email and she can assist you.
You made it all the way to the bottom! Thanks for sticking with me. As a reward, I will let you know that this year SMS is celebrating our 20th anniversary. We will be forming a committee soon to plan ways we want to celebrate. Are you interested in helping? Reach out, we'd love for your input and you to jump on board!
