Dear Special Education Families,

If the start of this school year at your house looked less like a smooth first-day photo and more like a week of adjusting, re-adjusting, and a few hard mornings, you are in very good company.

New teachers, new schedules, new buildings, new expectations. For our kids, change is not a small thing. For us as parents, it can mean holding a lot at once while everyone finds their footing.

That is exactly why SEPAC exists.

My name is Krystal, and I am the Chairperson of the Conroe ISD Special Education Parent Advisory Committee, better known as SEPAC. If this is the first you are hearing of us, welcome.

You are receiving this because you are the parent or guardian of a student who receives special education services in Conroe ISD, and that makes you part of this community whether you have ever attended a meeting or not.

What SEPAC is, in plain terms

We are a group of Conroe ISD parents who meet through the school year to learn together, share what is working, and bring the parent perspective to the district in an organized way. We are not a complaint line, and we are not a replacement for your child's ARD team. We are the place where families can get good information, find each other, and have a real seat at the table when decisions get made.

Some good news to start the year

SEPAC is now written into Conroe ISD board policy. That is a big deal. It means our committee is a permanent, recognized part of how the district works with families, not something that has to be rebuilt every year.

It also means we have a home. All of our meetings this year will be held at the Jett Center. Getting here took a lot of conversation and a lot of work alongside district leadership, and I want to say plainly that they have approached this in a positive way and have been genuinely willing to bring parents to the table. I am excited about what that opens up for us this year.

Our theme this year: Measuring Success With Your Child

Progress for our kids does not always show up the way a report card measures it. So this year we are focusing on a question worth asking out loud: what does real progress look like for your child, and how would you know it when you see it?

Not compared to the child down the hall. Compared to where your own child started.

Our first meeting

Thursday, September 24 at 6:00 p.m. at the Jett Center

We will start where the year starts, with goals. We will walk through how to read the goals in your child's plan, how to tell whether they are the right goals, and what you can do now to set your child up for a strong year. Bring your questions. Bring a copy of your child's goals if you have one handy. Bring a friend who has been meaning to come.

If you cannot make it in person, reach out anyway and I will make sure you get the information.

Come say hello

Whether your child was identified last month or has had services for years, you belong in this room. Hit reply anytime with a question, an idea, or just to introduce yourself and tell me about your kiddo. I read every message.

I am looking forward to meeting you.

Warmly,

Krystal Eicher Chairperson, Conroe ISD Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SEPAC)

Measuring success with your child

Somewhere in a folder at your house is a document with your child's goals in it. Maybe you have read it closely. Maybe you signed it in a room full of people using acronyms and have not looked at it since.

Both are normal.

This year, SEPAC is answering one question together: how do you know your child is making progress?

We are calling the year Measure What Matters. The idea is simple, and it is the thing we most need to hear repeated. Your child's growth is measured against where your child started. Not the class. Not a grade level. Not a sibling. Against your own kid, last year.

We meet four times this school year. Where we go after our first meeting depends on you, because the topics that matter most are the ones you tell us are keeping you up at night. We will be asking, and we will be listening.

We start on September 24 with goals, because you cannot measure anything until you know what you are measuring.

You do not need to know the acronyms. You do not need to have it figured out. You just need to show up as the parent you already are.

FAQ: What is SEPAC? FAQ: What is SEPAC?

The Conroe ISD Special Education Parent Advisory Council is officially part of board policy! But what exactly is a SEPAC?

New Here? Start With This.

What is SEPAC? A Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) is a parent-led group that represents the voices of families of students receiving special education services. We are a place for parents to safely share their concerns, find community and resources, and come together to make special education better for Conroe ISD students.

What is your mission? Supporting, educating, and empowering families of students receiving special education services. In practice that means two things. Empowering families by giving parents and caregivers the tools, resources, and voice they need to advocate confidently for their children's education. Connecting communities by bridging the gap between families and schools, so that every child's needs are seen, understood, and supported.

Why am I getting this email? Because you are the parent or guardian of a student who receives special education services in Conroe ISD. That makes you part of this community, whether you have ever attended a meeting or not. Nothing was shared about your child. You are on this list because families like ours are who SEPAC exists for.

Who can be a member? Any parent or legal guardian of a student currently receiving special education services in Conroe ISD. Educators, advocates, and community members are welcome to participate as non-voting guests.

What does it cost, and what do I have to sign up for? Nothing, and nothing. Come to a meeting and you are here.

Do I have to attend every meeting? No. Come to one, come to all of them, come to the one that happens to be about the thing you are dealing with right now. Every meeting is written so that someone attending for the first time can follow along.

I do not know any of the acronyms. Will I be lost? No. Most of us started exactly there, and some of us still quietly look things up. We explain terms as we go and there is no such thing as a question that is too basic in this room.

Can SEPAC help me with my child's situation? Not directly, and this is an important one. SEPAC is not a complaint line and we are not a substitute for your child's ARD team or the district's process. What we can do is help you understand the system, give you language and resources, point you toward the right person, and make sure you are not doing it alone. If you come to us with something specific, we will help you find where it actually belongs.

Where and when do you meet? All meetings this year are at the Jett Center. Our first meeting is Thursday, September 24 at 6:00 p.m.

How do I stay in the loop? You are already on the list. You can reply to this email anytime with a question, an idea, or just to introduce yourself and tell us about your kiddo.
