Strategic Plan Update Strategic Plan Update

Over the past month, about 50 staff members, students, parents, and community members have been meeting as part of the Mount Baker Strategic Plan Steering Team. This group has been reviewing community survey feedback, discussing what people value most about our schools, and beginning to shape draft core values and a vision for what the student experience in Mount Baker should be. The team has also started looking at student learning, attendance, and behavior data to make sure our work reflects both community voice and the realities of student outcomes.

We have one meeting remaining, where the group will explore a Profile of a Graduate—a way to begin defining what we want every Mount Baker graduate to know, be able to do, and believe about themselves as they leave our schools. In next month’s newsletter, we will begin sharing some of the outcomes the Steering Team has helped identify to guide the district’s next strategic plan. The image below highlights themes that emerged from the community surveys along with photos of the steering team at work.

Superintendent Update Superintendent Update

As we enter the final trimester of the school year, there is a great deal of important work underway across the district as we begin planning for next year. In this space, I will periodically share updates about district initiatives, committee work, and changes to policies or procedures so our staff, families, and community members can stay informed.

One area where we have recently received valuable input is the district calendar. Thank you to the nearly 200 parents who provided feedback through our calendar survey. We are continuing to work on the 2026–27 calendar and expect to bring a draft forward to the School Board for approval soon. It is also important to note that there may be adjustments to the calendar following this spring’s contract negotiations with our labor groups.

As shared in last month's newsletter, we are also forming a Budget Advisory Committee to help inform priorities as we prepare the 2026–27 district budget. This group will meet on April 2 and April 30 from 5:00–6:00 p.m. to discuss budget considerations and provide feedback to help guide our planning. Community members who would like to participate are welcome to reach out to me directly at jschenck@mtbaker.wednet.edu.

I appreciate the time and perspective that our community brings to this work. Thank you for your engagement to help us make thoughtful decisions for the future of Mount Baker students.

Counseling and Mental Health Resources Counseling and Mental Health Resources

Parents have recently made the thoughtful request for resources to support conversations with their children about personal safety. The document linked below was created with the help of our district counselors as an overview of the personal safety and prevention education currently provided to students through our counseling program. This document also has links to parent resources for families who would like guidance in having age-appropriate conversations at home.

In February, schools marked the 100th day of school when students often dress up as they imagine themselves as 100-year-olds.

Kendall also recently welcomed the Reptile Man for a fun assembly where students were introduced to various reptiles up close and personal!
