Student Engagement

Find Your Match (#13)

This is another activity that will get your students up and moving. Hand out one card to each student in the class and then have them get up and find the other student with the matching card. You can do this with many topics including: rhyming words, uppercase/lowercase, antonyms/synonyms, words/definitions, problem/solution, and words/pictures. I especially like doing this with math problems and solutions for older students and words to their matching pictures for younger students.

Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up

Use Stand Up-Hand Up-Pair Up at any point in the lesson to structure meaningful conversation. Think about using this strategy with rhyming words, math sentences, capital and lowercase letters, digital and analog clocks, vocabulary word and definition or initial consonant sound and pictures.

Instruction Spotlight

Watch Anita Archer's 2nd Grade Decoding Lesson.

Think about the Student Engagement strategies used:

  • Choral Response
  • Partner Share
  • Thumbs Up
  • Physical Actions
Also think about how Anita implemented an Instructional Routine:

  • Teacher points out target letter/blend
  • Students sound-out to self
  • Students put thumb up when they know the word
  • Students whisper word to partner
  • All read word together.
Because of the use of this routine, Anita was able to add in a few "extras". She gave examples, used the word in sentences, checked for understanding and had students physically act out a word.

Technology

EDpuzzle is free tool that allows teachers to embed questions and comments into videos, sourced from YouTube, Crash Course, Teacher Tube and more. The best part is that this tool not only requires students to interact with video content, but also provides teachers with feedback about about their students understanding of it.

Simply create an account with EDpuzzle, which you and your students can make using your GAFE account, and you’re ready to create.

Joe's Goals: Students sign up, create their daily goals, and then put a check mark on the days they reached their goals. This calendar-style format will be easy for students to understand and follow along with.
