Student Spotlight - Gage Cook

Thank you so much for helping me to be able to attend the American Chemical Society National Conference in Washington DC! I was able to get better acquainted with other Boise State interns. I was able to attend a career fair where I got to talk to people working in scientific fields. Last of all, I had the opportunity to present my own research on tantalum oxide!

Myself and some other students were able to do a special tour of the laboratories in the Library of Congress, Madison Building. I got to see what kinds of things they preserve and how they preserve them. The scientists work with old documents, books, paintings, audio recordings, images, maps, and pottery. I got to hear some audio recordings that were over a hundred years old, such as a recording of Alexander Graham Bell! I learned that they are currently decoding an old audio recording from Amelia Earhart that had been discovered a few days ago in the back of an old book.

I also had time to explore other things in Washington DC. At the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, I got to see historic airplanes like the P51 Mustang, machinery used in space like the Apollo 11 Command Module, and a planetarium. The Apollo 11 Command Module was my favorite thing, because it was not a replica. It was the real thing!

I was able to take a tour of the US Capitol Building. I saw lots of historical paintings and statues, as well as the old and new courtrooms from various versions of Congress. It was very fascinating to see what the Capitol Building looked like a long time ago. I also learned which parts of the Capitol Building were burned down during the war of 1812. Being able to see in person so much history, was very amazing

I also got to look around the Library of Congress Jefferson Building. I got to see the Gutenberg Bible, which is the oldest printed book in the world. There are only four copies of it in good condition. This one was pristine. I also got to see some older artifacts like Mesopotamian cuneiform (the oldest form of writing in the world), which is over 5,000 years old.

I was able to see the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. They have exhibits that include fossils, the deep sea, geology (including meteorites), and other exhibits that represent all of life on earth.
