Scholarships
The home stretch
The John K. Ryan Nursing Scholarship and the Bailey Holt Memorial Scholarship have recently received several notable donations bringing them very close to full endowment. In order for a scholarship to be endowed a total of $25,000.00 has to be raised. Generous donors have contributed nearly two thirds of that amount to the Bailey Holt Memorial Scholarship already. Donations currently total $16,587.28. The John K. Ryan Nursing Scholarship has received a total of $23,291.94, leaving only $1,608.06 to become fully endowed.
Would you like to help us get through the home stretch? Consider donating today.

Events
Disaster simulation
On Friday Oct. 18 Murray State University nursing and occupational safety and health administration (OSHA) students participated in a disaster simulation training. The purpose of interdisciplinary education simulations such as these are to provide first responders (occupational safety and health students) and nursing students the opportunity to practice skills and communication techniques needed in a mock simulation disaster activity.
This opportunity allows students to practice their roles and understand the roles of others during a disaster, and enhances communication skills when working with a variety of professionals. Disaster preparation is essential in improving outcomes in the event of an actual disaster.
Pictured left to right are senior nursing students Darcey Stanley, Payton Jones, and Abby Rickert receiving orders from the charge nurse during the simulation.

Faculty Spotlight
Dr. Summer Cross
We would like to welcome Dr. Summer Cross as she rejoins the faculty at Murray State University this semester. Dr. Cross returns to us after a two and a half year hiatus where she worked with the Kenaitze Indian tribe in Kenai, Alaska as a family nurse practitioner in a primary care clinic. Dr. Cross previously taught at Murray State from 2009 to 2017.
Before coming to Murray State, Dr. Cross worked on the orthopedic medical-surgical floor at Murray-Calloway County Hospital, and later took a position as the executive director of the Angels Community Clinic in Murray, Kentucky. She served on their board of directors from 2009 to 2017, and on the Kentucky Nurse editorial board from 2016-2017. She received the American Association of Nurse Practitioners Foundation Scholarship for doctoral students in 2012 while pursuing her PhD.
When asked about her favorite areas of research, Dr. Cross said, “My research has primarily focused on the impact of nurse practitioner practice on access to care, but I have also been involved in student-led research and enjoy editing and reviewing manuscripts. I’m excited to start working on some new projects with colleagues here at Murray State.”
Dr. Cross has taught courses in leadership and management in nursing, freshman transitions, adult health II, health policy for DNP students, primary care courses for FNP students, advanced assessment for DNP students, and nursing assessment for RN-BSN students.
