NISD Middle School Battle of the Books
Battle of the Books Informational Session
The Battle of the Books tournament, which will be held on March 24, 2027, is a competition among Northside ISD middle schools to determine which team best knows 20 selected award-winning books. The list includes ten novels from the Lone Star list and ten graphic novels from the Maverick list. Each school sends one team of four students to compete in a three-round tournament by identifying the books that match up with the questions provided. If we have more than one team of students, we will have a Briscoe MS Battle of the Books to determine which team will advance to the district competition in March! Students are invited to attend an informational session October 6 from 8:00-8:25am in the library to learn more!
Hispanic Heritage Month
CELEBRATING HISPANIC AMERICANS, THEIR CULTURE, AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE UNITED STATES
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or DÃa de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.
