Head Cheetah's Message

Families,

I hope you are continuing to enjoy these beautiful fall days! On Tuesday evening, the weather was perfect as we officially cut the ribbon on our “Memorial Heart of the School Garden”! Many members of our community came to celebrate the success of our new school garden! There were crafts, ice cream sundaes, hot cider, and scavenger hunts. We look forward to all of the planting that will take place next spring!

I can hardly believe that we are entering the last week of October. Our students have already grown and learned so much! Please take a moment to review the “Save the Dates” segment of our newsletter. November is a short, but busy month!

As always, thank you for your partnership!

Joey and Andrea

Gym News Gym News

Hi everyone,

It’s been a great fall with the children progressing nicely in many different areas, including overall fitness and strength, various skill development, and with our classroom expectations, such as effort and taking pride in all that we do, appreciating the efforts of their classmates and working together on various tasks and activities. All skills are taught in a progressive, age appropriate manner, with the skill level increasing as children move up in grades.

Pre Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and Grade 1

Our students have been continuing to work hard, doing their best, being a kind and helpful partner, and improving their fitness, strength and flexibility. In our frisbee unit, we worked on throwing and catching, as we incorporated and worked on understanding how to curve or bend the frisbee and control its flight, as well as different catching techniques. We finished with a modified frisbee golf activity that groups played and had fun with. We also spent some time working at fitness and skills stations in the gym, along with our usual running and exercising routines. Grade 1 students also participated in our lacrosse unit and a mile run/walk challenge.

Grade 2 and Grade 3

The students have been continuing to work hard, being a kind and helpful partner and improving their fitness, strength, and flexibility .We finished our lacrosse unit in late October, working on throwing, catching, cradling and scooping ground balls. In our frisbee unit, the children worked on catching a frisbee. The children were also shown different ways to throw a frisbee (bending and curving). We finished with a disc (frisbee) golf course that groups played, and practiced keeping their score. The students are also actively participating in the mile run/walk and running club, which is posted on bulletin boards in the gym. The children have been doing great and they take pride in their accomplishments and improvements, as we do!

Coaches Corner - Kindergarten and Grade 1 Literacy

Literacy routines are well established and skills are blooming in kindergarten and first grade! All classes participate in engaging phonemic awareness activities that support the foundational skills necessary for reading and writing. Ask your student to share some of the activities from their Heggerty lessons. They would love to teach you to chop some words! Fundations lessons are helping students with letter identification and letter-sound correspondence in kindergarten. In first grade, students are tapping and blending sounds to form words. Proper letter formation is also a focus for our students. They are being explicitly taught the correct strokes for each letter. It would be helpful to reinforce the proper technique when you are writing with your child at home. Here is a resource from Fundations to help. Fundations Letter Formation

Classes have been focusing on building good reading habits. Students engage in a variety of reading experiences daily. This may include read- alouds, shared reading, small group lessons and independent practice. You can support your child’s reading development by reading with them nightly. Research indicates that students who read daily for 20 minutes at home have greater vocabularies, perform better on assessments and have better physical and mental health .You can read to your child, they can read to you, or you can share the reading experience. This is not only a fun way to bond with your child, but it also supports fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills. Memorial students love to read!
