York High School Weekly Memo
Some thoughts for the starting school year

Hi Everyone,
I hope you are having a great week. It may seem like the memos keep getting longer and longer, but we have a lot of fun and important things happening at YHS (and in the community), and I want to make sure you have all of the information. We are still cruising through the first quarter, but it will be wrapping up on Friday, October 31. Speaking of Halloween, if students elect to wear a costume to school, they cannot have masks covering their faces, weapons, or any type of blood.
We sent a group of Choral and Instrumental students to the District One Honors Festival auditions earlier this week. We will find out soon how they did. Thank you, Mr. Westerberg, Mr. Sovetsky, and Mr. Murray, for supporting our musical students!
We also had Photo II and AP Art students go to the Ogunquit Museum of American Art yesterday. The Ogunquit Museum of American Art sponsored the bus to visit the exhibit of Gisela McDaniel’s portraits. Both A.P. Art and Photo II will be participating in an art show at the O.G.A.A. in December. Thank you, Mrs. Sunderland and Mr. Shenett, for giving our students such an enriching experience.
Congratulations to the Varsity Golf Team for their great performance at the Class B State Championship last weekend. The team finished in 2nd place (by just two shots)! What a way to end the season! Thank you, Coach Estes, and we are so proud of these Wildcats!
Next week, we are fortunate to have guests from Obersulm, Germany, our German partner school, joining us at YHS. They arrive in York on Saturday, October 18, and leave on Tuesday, October 28. This is an exchange that has been going on for nearly 20 years, and a special thank you to all of the families who are hosting these students while they are here! They will shadow YHS students for four days in the school and take part in other field trips on the other days.
Enjoy the rest of your week. Don't forget, if you need picture retakes, they are next Thursday! If you have any questions or need anything, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Thanks,
Amanda
York High School is proud to recognize junior, Katelin Bloomer, as our Seacoast Student of the Week. In addition to being a top-notch AP scholar, Katelin is a long-standing and valued member of both the civil rights team and the Eco Club, where she helps promote equity, inclusion, and environmental stewardship within our school and larger community. Her consistent efforts bring ideas like school-wide campus cleanups and social justice campaigns to life.
Katelin is also a dedicated athlete, running for the cross country and track teams, bringing the same determination and focus to athletics that she does to her academics. AP chemistry and AP environmental science teacher, Sue Graham, describes her as conscientious, curious, and kind, with a strong work ethic and integrity. Katelin’s passion for science continues to inspire her program of studies at YHS, as she looks to pursue a future career in the field. Congratulations, Katelin!
Cold & Flu Season Reminders from Nurse Sarah La Croix!
When to Keep Your Student Home
We know school attendance is important, but so is not sharing the germs! Please keep your student home if they've had a fever or vomiting within the last 24 hours. When in doubt, you can always check our full attendance guidelines here. A little rest goes a long way!
A Note on Cold and Allergy Meds
My little office cabinet is fully stocked with cough drops, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen for minor aches and pains! However, please remember that I cannot dispense over-the-counter allergy or decongestant medications. If your student needs these, please make sure they take them before coming to school.
The Best Way to Reach Me (I Love Hearing From You!)
Please direct attendance calls (e.g., "My child is staying home today") to the main office. But, if you have any health-specific updates or questions for your student - like a new medication, an injury, or simply a health concern - please call or email me directly at slacroix@yorkschools.org. I'm always happy to help!
Wishing you all a healthy and spirited school year!
Sarah La Croix, BSN RN

If you have any questions about the events listed below, please reach out to your student's school counselor for more information.
College Rep Visits
College rep visits are starting up, and they'll be held in person or virtually this year. These visits are a great chance to talk with college representatives about their campuses and what they offer. Sometimes, the reps you meet with are the same admission counselors who will be reviewing your application!
There are many colleges and universities visiting, so be sure to check out all the available slots in Naviance. For virtual visits, it's important to be in a quiet space so you can have a clear conversation.
Juniors and seniors can sign up and reserve their spot through Naviance by clicking on the "What's new" window on your Naviance home page. If you need a quiet place to participate, please let Student Services know ahead of time. If you have any questions, please reach out to us in Student Services.
