So Many Books, So Little Time

Hi Everyone!! Happy New Year!!!

I've been giving our "Book Club" a lot of thought. I know that everyone, students and teachers are very very busy this year.

So instead of reading a book as a group, I thought we could try something a little less time consuming.

I'd like to ask each of you to create a GoodReads account.

It's a great way to keep track of what you have read. But you do NOT have to write a report or a review. You can just enter your books as you read them.

I only wish it had been available when I was in school so that I could look back at the books that I read.

With GoodReads, you can submit books that you are reading now, books that you read in the past or books that you would like to read in the future.

You can use GoodReads on your computer or as an app on your device.

Here is my profile.

Cinderella Is Dead

Recommended by Ms. Goldson

"I love a fantasy book that brings all the magic, pushes against all the ways we have been told we should not exist, AND has heroes in it that look like me! Read, Read, Read this book...and then we can talk about our love of sci-fi and fantasy, and a Belize reimagined."

One Crazy Summer

Recommended by Ms. Penny

I totally enjoyed this book. Being an oldest sister myself, I was really able to relate to Delphine as she takes care of her younger sisters on their trip across the country to meet the mother who left them years ago.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Recommended by Mr. Zuniga

"It is a self-improvement book that states, in order to change a given situation, we must change ourselves, and in order to change ourselves, we must be able to change our perceptions."

Where the Crawdads Sing

Recommended by Ms. Deirdre

"This novel takes place in a small, quiet town on the North Carolina coast. It is a story about perseverance, survival, and determination as well as the beauty of the marshland and importance of environmental awareness and the celebration of nature. All of that is adeptly interwoven throughout the novel with the intrigue of the "unthinkable"... a murder in this tiny sea side community."

The Way I Used To Be

Recommended by Ms. Keme

A single act has the power to completely transform your life. The Way I Used To Be is a brilliant portrayal of trauma. A brutally honest novel about trauma's long-term effects. Eden, 14, awakens in the middle of the night to find Kevin, her brother's best friend, raping her.

Amber Smith, the author, does not sugarcoat how being sexually attacked affects Eden psychologically, physically, and emotionally.
I can't recall the last time I had such a strong emotional reaction to a book, especially one that wasn't part of a series. Eden's story is raw, honest, emotional, strong, and utterly authentic. As I read each chapter, I yearned for Eden to tell someone what had happened to her.
