The Elkster
September 16, 2024
EES Families,
We hope that everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather this weekend! We would like to take this moment and thank all of the families that came out to the first PTA meeting of the year. There was an amazing turnout. Thank you!
Early Dismissal Day: Wednesday, September 18, 2024:
We have our first 3-hour early dismissal day this week. Please be sure to make arrangements to receive your child at 12:55 PM. Early pick-up from school ends at 12:15 PM, as dismissal procedures begin shortly after that time.
Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month:
This month at Elkridge we are proud to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. Every year, we observe National Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month from September 15 - October 15. We celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic people whose ancestors are from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated to understand how Hispanic people have helped make major contributions to our country.
As we continue to build routines and get settled into our work for this school year, we would like to remind you of the following:
Health Room Updates:
Please remember that students should be kept at home if they are experiencing any symptoms associated with communicable disease such as (but not limited to):
Sore throat
Cough
Fever (100 degrees or higher)
Difficulty breathing
Diarrhea
Vomiting
Health Services information can be found online and will be continually updated. All students, staff and visitors should perform daily health checks and may not enter an HCPSS bus or building if they exhibit any signs of a communicable disease. Details, including infection control protocols for communicable diseases like COVID-19, are available online.
The health room staff also highly recommend keeping a change of clothes in your child’s backpack. We have seen many students across all grade levels in the health room that require a change of clothes, and we do not have enough spare clothes to provide a clothing change for every student. If students have spare clothing in their backpack, this will allow them to quickly get cleaned up and return to the classroom without missing valuable instructional time.
Car Loop:
Please be sure not to have any cell phones in your hands as you move through the car loop, as this is against the law. Moving through the car loop, it is important to stay alert to the staff members guiding you safely in and out of the school in the morning and afternoon. Please support our staff and students by ensuring that we are refraining from using cell phones while driving on campus. Several staff members have almost been hit by cars with distracted driving on campus. Please be aware of the motion path and movement throughout the school campus.
Recess:
We have observed students attempting to perform gymnastic stunts during recess. While we encourage active play and fun, we kindly ask for your support in reminding your child that gymnastics are not allowed during recess for safety reasons. Our goal is to ensure that all students have a safe and enjoyable recess experience. Thank you for partnering with us to reinforce this important safety message. We appreciate your support in keeping recess safe for everyone.
Early Pick-up From School:
Please know that on a full day of school, the end time to pick your child up early is at 3:15 PM. Please make sure to have your ID with you when you come in to pick your child early from school.
Family File:
At this time we have only 55% of our Family Files completed! Please update your family file, even if your information has not changed since last year. HCPSS requires all families to review their information and confirm. You can access the Family file through the HOT LINKS section right below. Thank you so much for your attention to this!
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Kelley Powell, Principal
LaShonne Wright, Assistant Principal

School Lunch
HCPSS participates in the Free and Reduced-price Meals (FARMs) program. Qualification. is based on family size and income, and enrollment is confidential.
Participation in FARMs qualifies students for a wide range of opportunities and resources beyond breakfast and lunch, including free college applications, free or reduced JumpStart tuition, discounted internet through the Comcast Internet Essentials program, and more.
Families must submit a new application every school year by Oct. 31. During the first 30 school days, students with FARMs eligibility from the prior school year will continue to receive benefits. Any student whose family has not filled out an application by the 30th school day will have their status changed to full pay until a new application is received.
Parents/guardians are highly encouraged to fill out the applications as soon as possible. It is very important that applications are filled out accurately and completely. Families can:

We thoroughly enjoy when parents come in to enjoy lunch with their child. We ask that you remember the following when visiting:
