Lord Jesus,

Look with love on grandparents the world over. Protect them!

They are a source of enrichment for families, for the Church and for all of society.

Support them! As they grow older, may they continue to be for their families

strong pillars of Gospel faith, guardians of noble domestic ideals,

living treasuries of sound religious traditions. Make them teachers of wisdom and courage,

that they may pass on to future generations

the fruits of their mature human and spiritual experience.

Lord Jesus, help families and society to value the presence and role of grandparents.

May they never be ignored or excluded, but always encounter respect and love.

Help them to live serenely and to feel welcomed in all the years of life which you give them.

Amen

Good afternoon Sacred Heart School families,

I saw an interesting exchange a couple of years ago between two guests on a panel. They were talking about their ageing parents and the changing relationships of grandparents. One guest questioned that other and asked how often they saw their parents, the guest answered about once a year. With his parents age around 70 years and the rough life expectancy at the time around 80 years, they approximately calculated that he would most likely see his parents 10 more times.

This perspective hit home for me. Rather than just assuming my parents, and grandparents to my kids, would be with us forever, it almost placed a timeline on how often I would see them and spend time with them before they passed. I know and appreciate that not everyone has grandparents available or accessible; my own parents live over 4000km away, yet the wonders of Facetime mean they still have connection and relationship with my kids and it is something to truly cherish as we celebrate Grandparents Day this week.

Many things have changed with schools and education since I started many years ago but one of the most significant changes has been the role that grandparents play in the lives of our students. From drop-offs and pick-ups, volunteering around the school, helping with homework or assisting at carnivals, our grandparents bring a true sense to the phrase: "It takes a village to raise a child". We are grateful to have the presence of our grandparents in our community and welcome them at every opportunity to be part of their grandchildren's schooling journey.

It was wonderful to host our annual Grandparents Morning Tea yesterday. Entertained by some talented pianists, an enthusiastic school choir and "The Band With No Name", our special guests were treated to a soiree of sound. A special thank you to our musical students who performed and we hope our grandparents enjoyed the opportunity to spend quality time with our students in their learning environment. Happy Grandparents Day!!

Sacred Heart School Interschool Chess Team

Yes, we even have an Interschool Chess Team. With over 40 participants in this years SHS Chess Tournament, our top four players earned the right to enter the CEWA Interschool Chess tournament, pitting themselves against the best of the best in our state. Congratulations to Conleth (Year 2), Samuel, Lachlan and Frankie (Year 6) who will compete over 3 separate rounds against 80 other competitors. The SHS Grand Final will see Samuel and Lachlan face off to take the ultimate crown. Good luck boys.

Darlington Arts Festival

We are looking forward to being part of the Darlington Arts Festival again this year on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th of November, and we encourage families to come along and enjoy this wonderful community event. Be sure to catch performances by our talented School Choir (2:50pm) and Year 6 Rock Band (5pm-9pm), who have been working hard to prepare a fantastic showcase of music and creativity. While you're there, make sure to visit the Sacred Heart School stall, where you'll find plenty to enjoy while supporting our school community. We look forward to seeing many familiar faces throughout the festival weekend!

2027 Catholic School Advisory Council (CSAC) and Parents and Friends (P&F) Committee

CSAC

The Sacred Heart School Catholic School Advisory Council (CSAC) works in partnership with the Principal and parish to support the strategic direction and Catholic mission of the school. Council members provide advice on areas such as school improvement, planning, policy, and community engagement, helping to ensure that decisions are made in the best interests of students and the wider school community.

P&F

The P&F fosters a strong sense of community by bringing parents, carers, and staff together through social events, fundraising activities, and volunteer opportunities. The association helps strengthen family engagement in school life while raising funds to enhance resources, facilities, and opportunities for students.

Nominations for 2027 Catholic School Advisory Council (CSAC) and Parents and Friends (P&F) Committee) are now open until Wednesday 18th of November. Community members are welcome to self-nominate via the link below and are asked to familiarise with the Terms of Reference, also available below. As per the Terms of Reference, if there are multiple nominations for single vacant positions, an anonymous ballot (voting) is undertaken at the Annual Community Meeting (ACM) to be held on Wednesday 25th of November at 6pm. Successful candidates will be announced at the ACM.

2027 Vacant positions include:

We thank those who have put their names forward to support and champion our Catholic community and place the best interests of our students at the forefront of all we do and say.

Smart Glasses - a message from CEWA

Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) has confirmed that smart glasses will be prohibited in Catholic schools from Monday 12 October 2026. This follows the Western Australian Government’s decision to prohibit smart glasses in public schools and reflects CEWA’s commitment to maintaining safe, respectful and secure learning environments for students and staff.

Smart glasses are wearable devices that may incorporate technology such as cameras, microphones, internet connectivity, artificial intelligence and recording or communication capabilities. Their use may create risks relating to privacy, child safety and wellbeing, unauthorised recording or sharing of information, information security and the integrity of learning and assessment.

From 12 October 2026:

  • Students and staff must not wear, use, charge or store smart glasses on school premises or at any school-organised event or activity.
  • Parents and caregivers, visitors and contractors must not bring smart glasses onto school premises or to any school-organised event or activity.

The Principal may approve an exemption where smart glasses are required for school-approved medical, accessibility or assistive technology purpose. An exemption may also be approved where smart glasses are being used as part of an educational program specifically authorised by the Principal.

Wishing you a pleasant and peaceful weekend ahead.

God bless
