Notes from Nurse Tammy
Dental Exam reminder: We are still in need of IL Dental Exam forms for many of our 6th grade students. These are required per the state. School dental exams must be completed within the 18 months prior to May 15th, 2026. Dental forms can be found on the district website. Please submit these soon.
Vision screenings are underway for all 8th grade students. If you do not want your child to be screened, please email the school nurse at tbush@fsd157c.org.
Many times, we hear the students say they didn’t have time to eat breakfast or brush their teeth because they are rushing in the morning. Please help your child develop routines that have them getting a good night's sleep to ensure all their morning responsibilities are completed.
If you still need to bring in medical forms or medications, please let us know. All forms can be found on the district website.
8th grade parents- it's not too early to get the IL Health Exams for high school completed. This is required per the State of Illinois, and schools may ask for this during registration in Spring 2026.
Library News from Mrs. Gujral
"There’s nothing better than curling up with a good book and sitting in front of the fire on winter evenings." Leo Sayer
To celebrate fall and winter, we have drenched our library in color with artwork made by our Adaptive Fine Arts class. Be sure to tell your students to stop by the library to check out the displays.
The last two years we have moved the FSP Book Fair into the library. This always brings lots of excitement and energy into the space. I want to send a shout out to all the students and families that made this Fall’s Book Fair the most successful Hickory Creek has ever had! Thank you!
We are smack in the middle of our Caudill book challenge. The upcoming school breaks are perfect times to catch up on reading. All 20 titles can be found on the Destiny Discover page. Don’t forget an entry must be submitted for each book read. The link to do this can be found on all ELA teacher’s TEAMS pages.
Stay warm!

Goal Setting – A Fresh Start to a New Year
Middle school is a pivotal time for students to begin building habits that shape their learning and confidence. Starting a new school year is a great time to introduce your child to the idea of setting goals. Setting goals can help build independence, improve focus, and boost confidence. Below are some simple goal‑setting steps you can use at home.
- Start with one clear goal and keep it specific and age‑appropriate.
- Make the goal measurable. Decide how you’ll track progress (days, minutes, pages, etc.).
- Set a short timeline. Try 2–4 weeks for an initial goal which is long enough to build a habit, and short enough to stay motivating.
- Break it into steps. List 2–4 small actions that move them toward the goal.
- Plan when and where. Attach the goal to a routine (after dinner, before bed, during study time).
- Review weekly. A 5–10 minute check‑in helps determine if the goal needs to be adjusted.
- Celebrate small successes along the way to keep motivation high.
When children learn how to set and achieve goals, they build confidence that carries over into school and life.
Extra-Curricular Updates
Getting Involved at Hickory Creek
We encourage all students to get involved with extra-curriculars at Hickory Creek!
Throughout the year, we will provide all sign-up information through our Tiger Time Advisory Teams page to students. There will be announcements on Power School and Tiger TV to notify students of when new activities are starting up.
- Please be sure to look at the list below with your child and encourage them to keep their ears out for upcoming activities that they may want to be a part of this year.
Extra-Curricular Highlights
Band and Orchestra
- The HCMS band and orchestra students sounded fantastic at their winter concert on December 3rd. All our instrumental ensembles performed for a packed house. We’re extremely proud of these amazing students! Coming up next is our band and orchestra breakfast on Thursday, December 18th. We’re excited to celebrate the kids on a successful first half of the year!
Chorus
- What a whirlwind last few weeks of the year! The Varsity Chorus, Advanced Choir and Show Choir all did a fantastic job at their Fall Concert. We had 180 people all join together to attend our annual dinner/theater event at Paramount Theater in Aurora to see “White Christmas” - what a beautiful evening! And all of our groups did a wonderful job spreading holiday cheer on the Holiday Tour at all three of our district schools, followed by a bowling social celebration of the first half of the year!
- Chorus rehearsals will resume on Tuesday, January 6. Any 6/7/8th grade students who are interested in joining chorus this year should contact Mrs. Walton via Teams Chat to join when we come back from break. This will be the only other opportunity this year to join chorus.
- Open auditions for this year’s spring musical, “Bye Bye Birdie” will take place the last week of January. More information will be available to all HCMS students in January, after break.
Student Council
- The Student Council had a very busy December. Our students and sponsors planned and promoted the annual Winter Theme Week to celebrate the countdown to winter break. They also supported our athletic teams by working the concession stands at both girls and boys basketball games.
- Looking ahead, the HCMS Student Council will be partnering with the Frankfort Lions Club to host a personal care items drive throughout January. All donated items will be given to local shelters and charities to support individuals and families in need within our community and surrounding areas.
Best Buddies
- Best Buddies has had a great month! This month, we celebrated the holiday season with fun games and crafts to help foster our friendships. Our next meeting will be on January 12th! At this meeting, we will plan on how to continue to promote inclusion in our building as well as how we will celebrate “Best Buddies Month” in March.
Cheerleading
- Our cheerleaders are gearing up for an exciting competition season! The routine division team has been working hard, bringing tons of spirit and dedication to every practice. Our Game Day squad has also officially learned their choreography and is looking sharp as they prepare to take the mat. We can’t wait to see all of their hard work shine in the competitions ahead!
8th Girls Basketball
- The 8th grade girls have had an incredible journey so far, and they’re not done yet! On December 4, they captured the Regional Championship with a win over Oak Prairie. Then, on December 10, they clinched the Sectional Championship against Romeoville Martinez. That incredible victory punched their ticket to State, earning them a spot among the final eight teams in the tournament.
- Congratulations, Tigers, the journey continues!
6th Boys Basketball
- The 6th grade boys’ basketball team is putting together an exciting season and continues to show improvement with each game. The team currently holds a 7–3 record and has been competitive on both ends of the court. Their focus and determination have helped them stay in control as they prepare for the DPVC tournament in mid-January. Leadership from players such as Levi Atkins, Drew Goodwin, and Riley Street has played an important role in the team’s success. Every athlete has contributed in meaningful ways, whether through game performance, effort in practice, or positive support from teammates. The growth, hard work, and team-first mentality have been great to see, and Coach Kroen is proud of the progress the team continues to make.
7th Boys Basketball
- The boys are having a very steady year as they have a great record through 75% of the season. Currently they are 13 – 4. The team has been controlling their destiny as they look to have all facets incredibly sharp for regionals in the last week of January. Everyone on the team has truly made contributions to make the team better, and Coach Ford is proud of the growth so far.
8th Boys Basketball
- The 8th grade boys are continuing to find their groove. Multiple players are continuing to learn and find enjoyment in the game. Some leaders of the team have been Jaxon Difiore, Gavin Murphy, and KJ Owens. Their current record is 6 – 11.

Wrestling
- Wrestling season is underway! We had our first dual against Troy—while the outcome wasn’t what we hoped for, a bright spot was seeing eight rookies compete in their very first matches. Our JV team also had a strong showing, winning 13 out of 20 matches.

- We’re proud of the effort and growth these athletes are showing early in the season. The dual meet schedule will continue through December and January—stay tuned for more updates!
Tiger TV
- Tiger TV production teams have been doing a wonderful job recording our full episodes. Each team is eager to learn how to use the equipment as well as learn each role. We look forward to seeing how much more these groups will learn and practice in this special club. Live streaming has also been a huge success. The Tiger TV club members have dedicated their personal time to live stream games and events so that family and friends at home can enjoy all the wonderful clubs and events going on here at the Creek!
ESports
- ESports have had a fantastic beginning. The Winter session has 24 students participating in Super Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, and Super Mario Brothers. The students are enjoying the competitive atmosphere among their peers and the excitement of playing in a high-energy setting. The Winter Intramural will conclude before the holiday break, and we eagerly anticipate another session in the Spring.

It was a great group of students this fall season, looking forward to Geo Club again next Fall.
- The Geography Bee took place on Wednesday, December 10th, at HCMS in the cafetorium. The Geo Bee was offered to ALL Hickory Creek students, not just the geography club students.
