From the Principal's Desk

Today was our all school ski day, and it was great to hear about the positive experiences students and staff had on the mountain. It is always exciting to see our school community take advantage of the incredible opportunities available in the Gunnison Valley. Thank you to the teachers, staff, volunteers, and partners who helped make the day run smoothly.

Along with time on the mountain, there continue to be many great things happening in and out of the classroom. Students are staying engaged in their learning, building strong routines, and supporting one another across activities and events. We are proud of the momentum we are seeing as the semester continues.

Go Mustangs!

GMS Substance Use Prevention Night: Friday, February 27, 6:30-8:30pm

GMS is collaborating with the Gunnison Police Department and the Gunnison County Substance Abuse Prevention Project (GCSAPP) to host two substance use prevention presentations for our students and parents/guardians on Friday, February 27th at 6:30pm. Presentations for 7th and 8th graders will take place during the school day and a parent/guardian presentation will take place that evening at 6:30pm at Gunnison Middle School.

Dinner will be provided for parents. While parents/guardians are participating in the substance use presentation, students and siblings can enjoy a movie and concessions in the GCS Commons.

RSVP by Monday, February 23rd: Please complete this short participation form so we know how much food to purchase.

The safety, health, and well-being of our students is our top priority. We hope these presentations will give students and families the opportunity to engage in this important conversation. Please let us know if you have any questions: rbrekke@gunnisonschools.net or (970) 641-7710.

Safe and Responsible Technology Use

Please take time to review our district's GWSD Student Safe and Responsible Use Policy (English and Spanish). All GMS students will be asked to review and sign this agreement starting January 12th. In addition, we ask that parents and guardians review our GMS Cell Phone Agreement (English / Spanish). Please contact Renee Brekke, GMS Assistant Principal if you have any questions rbrekke@gunnisonschools.net. Thank you for helping us support safe and responsible technology use at GMS.

7th and 8th Grade Ski Day Information

We look forward to bringing 7th and 8th graders skiing on January 30th and February 6th. In preparation for these special days, we'd like to remind you that there will not be any programming at GMS on these days. If your child does not plan to participate in the ski program, please plan to keep him/her home these days and contact the GCS Office to report their absence at (970) 641-7710.

  • Students that do participate in the ski program will bring home a code of conduct form for parent/guardian signature.
  • Students may request a school sack lunch, bring their own lunch, or bring money to purchase food. Please note that cash is not accepted at most restaurants.
  • Ski/snowboards are not allowed on school buses. Parents need to bring students on ski days or leave ski/snowboards at school if necessary. Trucks for gear will be located on the north end of the GMS building.
  • Students will load school buses at 8:30am. In the afternoon, 7th and 8th graders will either return on a school bus or the 3:45 or 4:15 RTA bus from the Mt. CB Transit Center. Students will be allowed to call parents/guardians when they board their bus for more specific pick up times.
  • Parents/guardians may pick up their child and ski gear in the GCS parking lot at approximately 4:30-5:00pm.

GMS Culture & Climate Parent Feedback

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are always striving to make GMS a great place for students, staff, and families to learn, make connections, and feel a sense of belonging. Each year, we ask for feedback from all members of our community so we can learn what we are doing well and generate goals for improvement. Please take a moment to complete our 2025-26 GMS Culture & Climate Parent/Guardian Feedback Survey to tell us how your child is making connections at GMS. Feel free to reach out with any additional questions and thank you for your support.
