Seniors!!

Scholarships: The big push now! Mary and I have been in the senior transitions classes discussing The Educational Foundation for Columbia Schools Scholarship, these are due the Wednesday BEFORE spring break at the Brooklyn Post Office. You can check out my weebly, I update this as quickly as I get information, and remember NEVER pay for scholarship searches, they are scams. wdiefenthaler.weebly.com

The College and Career Access Center with Mary have many upcoming workshops that will cover Scholarships, FAFSA, Career Assessment and Major Mapping. If you are interested please check out their website. https://www.jcisd.org/CCAC

John George Jr. Student Loans are ready as well. This is a private loan that you can borrow up to $6000 for four years, a total of $24000, with a 2% interest rate. Definitely a great way to help bridge the gap. http://www.johngeorge.org/

Juniors! I know this time of year starts to really drag. It's easy to start loosing interest in the SAT prep class. Here are a few apps that you could look into to help spice up your studies!

SAT Practice Prep through Varsity Tutors, SAT Exam Prep through Magoosh, and Remember That by Cerego, Inc. These might give you a different way to look at reviewing over the holiday break.

Sophomores! We will visited the Career Center on February 1st. If you loved a section and are hoping to go there next year, be sure to visit my Google Classroom and get signed up. The deadline to sign up for Career Center is March 11. There are many certificates and college credit that you can earn when you attend the career center.

After School Help: Tuesday and Thursday we have FREE after school help. Tuesday's our Math teachers stay after until 3:35 for drop in math tutoring and on Thursday Mrs. Wallace (English), Mr. Politowitz (science), and Mr. Parkinson (social studies) stay for all other subjects. Mrs. Ellsworth (special education) also stays on Thursday's. If you need a little extra help every now and then be sure to stop in!

8th hour, credit recovery has begun. If you have a class that you need to repeat, stop in and see me so we can get you started. This meets on Monday and Thursday's in Mr. McDevitt's classroom.

Mid-Year Questionnaire Mid-Year Questionnaire

We sent out the mental wellness survey again this week. Students will take a survey three times a year to see how they are doing academically and emotionally. This survey helps us to determine how best to support our students. This survey is completely optional and is not a grade.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Student Groups: Soft Skills

I will be doing a wide variety of groups all year long!! Topics will range based on the current needs of students. We play games and do a lot of fun activities!

This time we are foucsing on healthy relationships and conflict resolution.

Let me know if you want to be apart of this or if you want your student to join! We already started for the year but I do them all year long.

Minute Meetings: March

I am still working on my minute meetings for 8th and 9th graders this semester. This is a brief one-on-one meeting with all students using a structured short questionnaire. This questionnaire is completely volunteer and is not required. The questions are focused on career/future goals and how they are doing this year. Each student has an opportunity to explore their goals and voice their struggles. This process helps me to get a plan for each student and supoort them in anyway I can.

My happy place!

Happy March!!!

Hello! I hope all our CUES families are doing well and looking forward to Spring! It is right around the corner! We are very excited here at CUES to have Mr. Timmerman join us as our new principal so I can go back into my role as the counselor! We have some exciting things coming this Spring-we have a Virtual Career Day on April 8th (Any parents who would like to be a presenter for this is welcome! You can contact me for more information-forms were sent home last week.)

We also have MStep prep and testing coming our way so we ask that you please make sure the kids are getting plenty of sleep and eating a good breakfast. More information about testing will be coming soon!

I hope to do some career lessons in the upper grades, puberty lessons, 4-6, and conflict resolution as well as character building schoolwide this Spring as well.

Better weather is coming in a few weeks, and we can all get out and enjoy the warmth and sun! As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns -krista.schatzle@myeagles.org or 592-2181.

Mindfulness Moment

Each month I will be posting a Mindfulness Moment for students and their families to try at home. This month is Happy Place. Get into a comfortable position with minimum distractions. Think of a place that makes you feel peaceful, calm, happy. What does that place look like, is it a beach? A park? A comfortable spot your couch in front of a fireplace? Then think of the sounds of that place, then the smells of that place, and then put it all together in your mind and enjoy the peaceful happy place relaxing your body in the moment.

Groups

In March the first round of small groups for self control/conflict, worry, transitions and social will be wrapping up and a new set of students will be beginning groups. Please reach out if you feel your student could benefit from any of these. If your student has already been identified you will receive a letter from me the first week of group.

Did you know?

Columbia School District is partnered with Family Service and Children's Aid to provide counseling during school hours for students. This is a great resource for families that have difficulty getting students to counseling services in the evenings and weekends. Ask your building counselor if your interested in information on this for your student.

You can reach me by email: ashley.phelps@myeagles.org or by calling 517-769-8557, feel free to leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as I am available.
