🔍This Month's Focus: Reflection 🔎 🔍This Month's Focus: Reflection 🔎

As the school year winds down, new educators enter the Reflection phase, a time to look back on their journey, celebrate growth, and make meaning of their experiences. This is a powerful opportunity for mentors to help their mentees recognize how far they’ve come, both professionally and personally. Your encouragement and thoughtful questions can turn year-end reflection into a launchpad for continued growth. Thank you for walking beside them this year. Your steady support has made a lasting impact.

Ideas for Reflection and Gratitude

As the year comes to a close, reflection becomes a powerful tool for meaning-making and closure. These three letter-writing activities offer meaningful ways for mentors and mentees to celebrate growth, express gratitude, and share wisdom. Choose one, or all three, to support a thoughtful end to your mentoring journey. Feel free to use these as true letter-writing activities, or consider using the prompts to make this reflection a meaningful conversation using the stems to begin.

End-of-Year Reflection Activity: A Letter to Your Mentee
As you and your mentee wrap up your year together, consider culminating the experience with a meaningful gesture: write a letter that celebrates their growth and acknowledges their efforts. Reflect on what you’ve observed throughout the year, highlighting their personal and professional growth, teaching abilities, collaboration with colleagues, and emerging areas of expertise. This personalized reflection not only affirms their progress but also helps them step into the next school year with confidence and pride.

Invite Your Mentee to Reflect Through a Letter
Consider inviting your mentee to write a letter to you, sharing their insights from the year. This activity enables them to reflect on their journey, express gratitude, and look ahead with intention. Offer letter stems to get them started, such as:

  • This has been a year full of surprises and challenges. Some of them have been…

  • I feel good about…

  • You helped me…

  • I see myself…next year.

  • The best thing about being a first-year teacher was…

A reflective letter like this creates a memorable closing moment, strengthening your connection and providing insight into the lasting impact of your mentorship.

Pass It On: A Letter to a Future First-Year Teacher
Encourage your mentee to reflect by writing a letter to a future new teacher. This activity enables them to recognize how much they’ve learned while offering encouragement and practical advice to someone just starting. It’s a powerful way to build empathy and a sense of community across cohorts. You might share these sentence starters to inspire their thinking:

  • Some advice I have for you about planning is…

  • What I learned this year is…

  • I can help you with…

  • Ways you can expect your mentor to support you include…

  • What I most enjoyed this year is…

This letter can be a meaningful part of your closing conversation—or something they write privately as a way to recognize their growth and pay it forward.
