What's Happening in... Fourth Grade?

ELA:

Fourth grade students have been reading all about the Roman Empire in the Middle Ages. They’ve learned about the feudal system of government, and the relationship that kings, lords, knights, merchants, and serfs had with one another. They’ve discovered that life in a Medieval town as well as in a castle was not glamorous living! Students wrote an opinion paragraph about who they would choose to be if they lived during Medieval times. Surprisingly, no one wanted to be a serf! Currently, fourth graders have moved on to the Middle East and are reading about the Byzantine and Persian Empires and the life of Muhammad in Arabia during the Middle Ages.

Social Studies:

We have been celebrating the entire month of October! During Constitution Week, we learned about the three most important documents in the United States; the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Students also celebrated Hispanic Heritage month, as well as Oktoberfest.

Math:

4th Graders have moved on to multiplication and division and are becoming fluent with multi-digit whole numbers by using place value disc/dots to understand the standard algorithm. They are also solving multi-step word problems using the standard algorithm and strip diagrams.

Science:

Fourth graders are focusing on everything SPACE! They are learning about the different phases of the moon and patterns in the natural world such as what makes day and night, how shadows are formed, and what causes the different seasons.

What's Happening in... Fifth Grade?

The 5th-grade students are diligently trying to meet their targets in the Eureka Math program as we finish the second module, which consists in solving for quotients up to four-digit dividends by two-digit divisors. The students are competing weekly to place in the top 5 ST math challenges. Some of our 5th graders will participate in Learn Cook Grow program to learn about nutrition, gardening, and how to prepare a delicious dish. The students recently completed their 2nd CKLA unit, Early American Civilizations, and are excited to have started Unit 3: Poetry.
