An Important Update to the Community
District 300 remains committed to ensuring that every student feels safe, valued, and supported in our schools every day, no matter the circumstance.
In January of 2025, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) issued non-regulatory guidance to help school districts understand how changes to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) policies may impact school properties. ISBE wrote, “All children in the United States are entitled to equal access to a basic public elementary and secondary education, regardless of their actual or perceived immigration status, or the status of their parents/guardians -- a standard upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in Plyler v. Doe, even in instances when a student may be undocumented.”
Our district remains dedicated to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. We will continue to uphold policies and procedures that ensure our schools are places where all children are respected and empowered to learn and succeed.
Illinois law provides legal protections to those who live in the state, including immigrant communities, and there are local organizations that offer support and resources. For example, Centro de Información provides access to “Know Your Rights” resources on its website. To help ensure student safety, we encourage all families to review and update their emergency contact information in PowerSchool so we can reach the appropriate individual in case of an emergency. If you need assistance updating emergency contact information, please contact your child’s school and ask to speak with the registrar.
We recognize that this situation may cause stress or anxiety for some students. Any student in need of support, for any reason, is encouraged to reach out to a school counselor, a social worker, or an administrator. These staff members are available to listen, provide emotional support, and ensure every student feels valued and supported.
District 300 will continue to closely monitor developments at the federal, state, and local levels and adjust our procedures as needed to maintain safe and supportive schools for all students. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s principal. Student safety has always been District 300’s highest priority, and we will continue to uphold the highest standards to protect and support all of our students.
Schoology: Parent Account Information
Students and teachers use Schoology throughout the year for assignments and communication. A Schoology parent account is a great way to stay involved in your child’s education. By logging in, you can view your child’s classes, check upcoming assignments, and see important school and classroom announcements.
If you have never logged in, please take a moment to do so. Parents and guardians with students new to the district were sent login information shortly after registering their student for school. (This information was sent to the email address provided during registration. Be sure to check your spam folder if you don’t see it.)
A “Schoology Parent Guide” and more resources are available at www.d300.org/Schoology.
Many teachers also use the Schoology messaging feature to communicate with families. To receive email notifications when a teacher sends you a message – or to get alerts about late or missing student assignments – watch this helpful walkthrough video.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the Technology Help Desk at support@d300.org.
Reminder: Opportunity for Juniors – National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test
As a reminder, registration will be open through Thursday, October 2, for all juniors interested in taking the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT).
This optional test serves as the qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which recognizes and awards scholarships to high-performing students nationwide. Scholarships can range from a one-time award of $2,500 to a yearly award of $10,000.
Leadership and Learning Highlighted at 2025 AVID Summer Institute
Jacobs High School senior Constance Mahan (pictured above from left), Dundee-Crown High School junior Joselyn Sandoval, and Dundee-Crown graduate Sophie Firek were selected to represent District 300 at the 2025 AVID Summer Institute in Chicago.
During the event, each developed new skills in leadership and peer collaboration. In addition, Joselyn participated in a live Socratic Seminar on stage in front of thousands of event attendees.
AVID’s mission is to prepare all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society.
Fall Internships Providing High School Students with Career Experience
In partnership with Alignment Collaborative for Education, the following six District 300 students (pictured above from left) have started 60-hour health care internships at Sherman Hospital and VNA Health Care in Elgin:
- Abdul Mohammed (Dundee-Crown High School)

- Jocelyn Ramirez Vargas (Dundee-Crown High School)
- Brianna Hamblen (Dundee-Crown High School)
- Alyssa Kovach (Jacobs High School)
- Isabella Villeda (Jacobs High School)
For the first 30 hours, three of the students will be at VNA Health Care, while the other three students will be at Sherman Hospital. After 30 hours, the students will switch locations.
The students will rotate through a range of diverse departments at each facility to gain hands-on experience and an understanding of various health care fields.

District 300 Schools Host 9/11 Observances
Last week, schools across District 300 hosted 9/11 observances, which included moments of silence, outdoor flag ceremonies, and participation from first responders.
The activities provided an opportunity for students to better understand the events of Sept. 11, 2001, as well as the values of service, sacrifice, and community.
During an observance at Lakewood Elementary School, fifth grader Juan Hernandez said it is important to learn about 9/11 and be respectful about it.
“It was a very tragic event,” he said. “Thank you to the people that helped.”
Hampshire and Jacobs High School Seniors Recognized for Photography
Congratulations to Hampshire High School senior Stefan Misiaszek and Jacobs High School senior Alayna Schambach for earning recognition in the Kane County Regional Office of Education Student Photography Contest!
Each of the students’ photos was selected as a Top 10 submission in Week 1 of the contest, which featured the theme “Architecture.”

Dundee Middle School Staff Member Receives Blue Ribbon Society Honor
Congratulations to Dundee Middle School safety staff member Mr. Greg Wilson, who recently received Blue Ribbon Society recognition at a Board of Education meeting.
On August 18, Mr. Wilson performed life-saving measures in the cafeteria at Dundee Middle School during sixth grade lunch, saving a student who was choking.
District 300 thanks Mr. Wilson for prioritizing the health and safety of our students.
The Blue Ribbon Society recognizes individuals who demonstrate admirable qualities aligned to District 300’s central mission: to provide engaging and inclusive educational experiences that empower and equip all students to discover, innovate, and succeed now and in the future.

Oak Ridge School Students Gain Insight Into Creative Career Opportunities
Earlier this month, students at Oak Ridge School had the opportunity to learn about careers within the fashion design industry and marketing from Claudia Arroyo with the Junior Achievement organization.
Ms. Arroyo shared details about her journey in the fashion world, offering a unique perspective on creative careers.
“This event is part of our commitment to bringing real-world career experiences directly to our students,” noted Jon Anderson, coordinator of college and career readiness for District 300. “We can't wait to see the creativity this sparks in our students!”
Jacobs High School to Celebrate 2025 Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees
Congratulations to the Jacobs High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2025, which will be recognized on Friday, September 26, during halftime of the home varsity football game.
The four inductees are:
- Jessica Mueller (Class of 1993) – was a conference champion in track and qualified for state all four years of high school in multiple events; she was also an All-Conference selection in cross country.
- Suzette Rose (Class of 1999) – was a conference champion and state qualifier in triple jump; she also went to state for long jump.
- The 2015 boys baseball team – was the first boys team at Jacobs in any sport to reach the final four; the team’s season ended with a Class 4A third place finish at state, a school-record 29 wins, and a team-earned run average of 1.69, still the lowest in program history.
- And the 2003-04 girls basketball team – was an Elite Eight contender for the first time in school history, capturing its first regional title in the process and setting a record of 24 wins and eight losses.
