2023-24 Student Handbook Changes
Each school year, the Student Handbook is reviewed for necessary revisions and is posted to the District’s website. You can view the current Student Handbook on our website under General School Information >>> Parent Resources >>> Student Handbook.
There were some changes made this year that we would like to call out for our families. You can find the full list of changes on our website at rlas-116.org.
Some of the changes include:
Schools shall not prohibit students from wearing or accessorizing the student’s graduation attire with items associated with the student’s culture, ethnic, or religious identity or any other protected characteristics identified in the Illinois Human Rights Act.
School boards must allow “public middle school and high school” students one day-long excused absence per school year for the purpose of attending a civic event.
Prevention of and Response to Bullying, Intimidation, and Harassment
The amendment to this section expands the list of students who are protected under the handbook procedure and requires schools to attempt to notify a parent or guardian within 24 hours of the school’s administration becoming aware of an alleged bullying incident.

THANK YOU to Our Community Partners!
This school year would not be the same without our valued partners in the community, and there are many. Notably, thank you to all businesses and organizations that donated backpacks and supplies, including United Way, Avon Township and New Hope Christian Community.
We'd also like to thank United Way for their partnership in Round Lake's Kindergarten Countdown Camp. The camp is a free summer program for incoming kindergarten students that helps them learn social and emotional skills and prepare for kindergarten. Check out United Way of Lake County's video on YouTube to see all the fun kids had this summer!
We're also grateful to the Chicago Bears for working with our schools and students at Mini Monsters Clinics and during our Homecoming Games.
We are Round Lake!
Safety Drill Updates
This week we sent an email to all families letting them know about our new Lockdown drill strategies. We wanted to let you know about some new changes being incorporated into our safety drills this school year.
To maintain our safety standards and adapt to the societal threat of a violent intruder inside our schools, our District has incorporated ALICE proactive safety strategies into our Lockdown drills this year. ALICE is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate.
As schools begin to initiate the required Lockdown drills this fall, they will be incorporating more conversation into the drills that are aligned with ALICE safety protocols and are age-appropriate.
Examples of how ALICE safety discussions will be incorporated into the first Lockdown drill by grade level are listed below.
Elementary Students (Grades Preschool-5)
- A Lockdown Drill will be initiated and students and staff will move into locked spaces.
- Teachers will read the book, “I’m Not Scared… I’m Prepared! Because I Know All About ALICE”. This book, written by Julia Cook, is a children’s story that allows teachers to discuss safety measures in the classroom in an understandable, age-appropriate, and non-fearful manner. The book provides teachers with strategies to incorporate into a discussion with students that will help prepare them for an appropriate response in the event of a safety incident.
Middle & High School Students
- Students will be provided with a short presentation that will discuss the details of the ALICE strategies (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate).
- A Lockdown Drill will be initiated and students and staff will move into locked spaces.
- A discussion will commence regarding the implementation of the new ALICE strategies.
As in previous years, parents/guardians will have the option to decide if their child is to participate in a Lockdown Drill. As lockdown drills are scheduled, you will receive a separate notice that provides you with your rights as it pertains to your child’s participation in the drill.
For the full email with more details on the drill procedures, please visit our website.
The Village of Round Lake Beach and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning are looking for input from families on the Round Lake Beach Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan.
The plan aims to identify strategies to improve the safety and comfort of walkers and cyclists in our communities.
Families are encouraged to participate in several ways:
