The Scoop
A Note from the Principal
Our first full week was a great one! I held our first school assembly, where we talked about the shape of a Rox El Tiger and what it means to bounce back — and grow! — from challenges.
We also reviewed our Student Code of Conduct (SCOC), which is viewable here. If you don't want to read through all of that text, we also have a student-friendly video version of our Code of Conduct. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about the SCOC!
Curriculum Night was lovely! I so enjoyed getting to see our team in action and then heading outside for a beautiful evening on the blacktop. I am really starting to see what a special school community Rox El is.
A quick heads-up for next week: It is going to be very warm in the building. Please send your child with a water bottle and have them dress in cool, comfortable clothing. Students on the second floor (1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders) may especially feel the heat. Hopefully this will be our last heat spell before some cooler September temperatures arrive!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Attendance Checkpoint
Regular, on-time attendance makes a big difference in student success. When students arrive on time and stay for the full school day, they are able to participate fully in learning, classroom routines, and important connections with their teachers and classmates. One of our big goals this year at Rox is to ensure strong attendance -- and that includes avoiding tardies and early dismissals.
Tardies and early dismissals add up over time and can result in students missing valuable instructional minutes. Whenever possible, we encourage families to schedule appointments and other commitments outside of the school day. Thank you for partnering with us to make every school day—and every minute—count!
Staff Feature: Ms. Woods
This week, I'm excited to highlight Ms. Kim Woods, our Alternative Learning Center (ALC) Ancillary! Ms. Woods brings 29 years of experience in education and is a wonderful member of our Rox El team.
Ms. Woods is well-versed in restorative practices and skilled at helping students navigate challenging moments, manage big emotions, and get back on track. She is also always willing to jump in wherever she is needed to support our students and staff!
When asked how she hopes to make an impact at Rox El, Ms. Woods shared that she wants to do so by “building meaningful relationships with students, supporting their growth, and creating a space where they feel safe, valued, and encouraged to always do their best.”
Ms. Woods is a graduate of Youngstown State University and is inspired by Viola Davis, whose memoir Finding Me resonated with her because of Davis’s perseverance and determination to overcome challenges.
And a couple of fun facts: Ms. Woods loves a hot Americano with no cream and no sugar. She would also love to take a trip to Barbados someday.
We are so fortunate to have Ms. Woods supporting our students!
New! 4th & 5th Grade Intramural Sports & Chess Club
We are excited to launch a new, free Intramural Sports & Chess Club for our 4th and 5th grade students, led by our counselor, Mr. Steward and one of our wonderful paraprofessionals, Mr. Husain! Students will have opportunities throughout the year to participate in flag football, basketball, soccer, and chess while building teamwork, confidence, leadership, sportsmanship, and connections with their school community. No previous experience is needed — our goal is to create opportunities, not barriers!
The program begins this Monday, August 31st and will take place on Mondays and Tuesdays, with opportunities before school from 8:15-8:35 AM and during lunch/recess from 12:20-12:50 PM. Students will not miss classroom instruction to participate.
Note: Mondays are for girls and Tuesdays are for boys.
Please check out the program information and slide deck here. Questions can be directed to Mr. Steward (c_steward@chuh.org) or Mr. Husain (a_husain@chuh.org).
Rox El is Hiring!
We are looking for a part-time, licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) to join our Rox El team! The position is approximately 20 hours per week (about 2.5 days), and we have some flexibility with the schedule and can work around other commitments.
If you are a licensed SLP — or know someone who might be a great fit for our school community — I would love to connect! Please reach out to me at m_barrett@chuh.org for more information. You may also submit an application through the CHUH portal here.
Please feel free to share with your networks!
