Principal's Message Principal's Message

Dear Hiteon Elementary Community,

Happy New Year! As we begin 2025, we look forward to the opportunities ahead and the growth of our school community. We have been working to strengthen our connections with families, and our Library Night in October and the upcoming Social-Emotional Learning event in February are just a couple of ways our school is creating meaningful partnerships with our families.

Our PTC does an outstanding job connecting our community with events such as the upcoming Bingo Night, the Science Fair, and OBOB, as well as events that have already taken place, including Trunk or Treat, Walk and Roll Day, and Popcorn Day. We hope you consider bringing your family to these events to experience the amazing Hiteon community. Additionally, if you are interested and want to support our PTC by helping at these events, we would love to have you! You can reach out at info@hiteonptc.org for answers to your questions or to volunteer at one of the many events!

We are also thrilled to expand before- and after-school opportunities for our students. The Walking School Bus and our new morning offering of Play Fit Fun help begin the day with exercise. Starting next month, we’re introducing a 3-D Printer After-School Club for grades 3-5, Green Team, Lego class, and Art classes, providing students with a hands-on, creative learning experience. While some of these programs have associated costs, we recognize this can be a barrier for families. We are continuing to work on expanding our opportunities for before and after-school activities that are free.

If you have ideas for more opportunities for before and after school activities, please let Janet Maza or Jenny Read-Emslie know.

As always, our top priority is ensuring that students receive the best education possible. Attendance plays a critical role in this effort. Regular attendance is key to providing students with the consistent learning opportunities they need to thrive. We ask for your support in making attendance a priority for your students this year.

In the spirit of kindness, this month, our students will continue the tradition of creating Valentine’s cards for senior citizens as part of our kindness campaign. A special thank you goes to our wonderful PTC volunteers for designing a beautiful bulletin board highlighting how kindness at Hiteon begins with each student’s thoughtful actions. Together, we are building a culture of kindness and respect.

Thank you for being an important part of our Hiteon Elementary family!

Sincerely,

Janet Maza and Jenny Read-Emslie

Inclement Weather Information Inclement Weather Information

zoom_out_map

When we experience inclement weather, school schedules can be affected — either by a delayed start, early release or school cancellation. The district makes decisions based on the ability of:

  • The district to operate school buses safely.

  • Students and parents/guardians to drive safely.

  • Students to walk to schools or bus stops safely.

  • Staff to get to work safely.

Decisions are made for the entire district. However, we encourage families to make transportation and attendance decisions for their children based on their own assessment of travel conditions at their locations.

School delays or closures are typically communicated by 5:30 a.m. For the latest information:

  • Check the district website. A page pop-up will be posted if there’s a change in school operations. You also can find inclement weather protocols and snow routes online.

  • Look for a notification on ParentSquare.

  • Follow us on the district’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.

  • Tune into media outlets for updates.

Parents Lunching with Students in Cafeteria Parents Lunching with Students in Cafeteria

We know that it is a treat to be able to have lunch with your student once in a while and even on their birthday. Unfortunately, updated district policy now directs us to no longer allow parents to have lunch with students in the cafeteria.

Student Safety

In our cafeterias, we can have upwards of 100 children, typically with only 2-3 staff members present. Those staff members are busy attending to students' needs. We simply don't have enough staff in the space to sufficiently supervise adult visitors and the potential contact those adults may have with other students. Even if those adults have passed a background check as part of the volunteer process, staff are still required to have "sight or sound" supervision for the safety of all children.

Student Disruption

Based on previous experiences, having adults in the cafeteria can result in two kinds of disruptions. First, there have been cases in the district of parents injecting themselves into student conflicts. Parents may lack the training and context that our teachers and staff have for dealing with these types of student situations; the district does not want to have parents "disciplining" students.

If you have any questions regarding this new update, please feel free to contact the main office.

Mrs. Sadlouskos has been studying Spanish via Zoom and Maesta Betty from Urguay has been her Spanish Instructor. While Meastra Betty was visiting family on the East Coast she decided to adjust her trip home to come to Hiteon and spend the day with our students. We've loved having her if even for just the day.

Volunteer Background Check System Volunteer Background Check System

open_in_new zoom_out_map

If you haven’t done so already, please reapply to be a volunteer in the Beaverton School District. We’re implementing a new volunteer management system over the summer and need time to process and complete the criminal background checks for all applicants.

Start on the Volunteer webpage on the district website. The entire process — including the review of the Child Abuse Prevention & Reporting and Adult Sexual Misconduct training materials — should take less than 10 minutes to complete.

Thank you for prioritizing our students’ safety and for your willingness to volunteer in BSD.
