D14 Elementary Tournament Saturday!

This Saturday, we are excited to host the District 14 Elementary School Debate Tournament at MS 50! This is an incredible opportunity for our students to serve as judges and mentors to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students from across our district. Student judges should arrive by 8AM and there will be donuts provided for the students. They will judge throughout the day and will be dismissed by 2:30pm. If you have not completed the permission slip, please complete it on Operoo or on the paper slips distributed today.

6th Grade: Unit Rate and Percentages

In this unit, students learn to understand and use the terms “unit rate,” “speed,” “pace,” “percent,” and “percentage,” and recognize that equivalent ratios have equal unit rates. They represent percentages with tables, tape diagrams, and double number line diagrams, and as expressions. They use these terms and representations in reasoning about situations involving unit price, constant speed, and measurement conversion.

7th Grade: Proportional Relationships and Percentages

In this unit, students use ratios, scale factors, unit rates (also called constants of proportionality), and proportional relationships to solve multi-step, real-world problems that involve fractions and percentages. They learn to understand and use the terms “repeating decimal,” “terminating decimal,” “percent increase,” “percent decrease,” “percent error,” and “measurement error.” They represent amounts and corresponding percent rates with double number line diagrams and tables. They use these terms and representations in reasoning about situations involving sales taxes, tips, markdowns, markups, sales commissions, interest, depreciation, and scaling a picture. Students use equations to represent proportional relationships in which the constant of proportionality arises from a percentage, e.g., relationship between price paid and amount of sales tax paid.

8th Grade Algebra: Linear Equations, Inequalities and Systems

In this unit, students expand and deepen their prior understanding of expressions, equations, and inequalities. Students reason about equations, inequalities, and systems of equations and inequalities, as ways to represent constraints, and they reason about the process of solving equations and inequalities in terms of finding values that satisfy those constraints. The process of finding solutions may involve rewriting and manipulating equations. Students learn to explain and validate the steps to do so. Throughout the unit, students practice reasoning about situations and mathematical representations, interpreting expressions and numbers in context, and using mathematical tools to model quantities and relationships.

Space Planning Update

We have great news! After two years of fierce advocacy from our families, the PTA’s Space Planning Committee was notified last week that the four remaining rooms on the 3rd floor will be given back to MS 50, meaning the entire 3rd floor will be for the use of MS 50 students! It will take a few months to get these rooms ready for use by our students and the space planning committee will continue to advocate for these rooms to be fully equipped for our students and discuss ways to fight for more resources for our children. If you would like to be a part of these discussions, reach out to join our space planning committee.

One of our goals this year is for every student at MS 50 to complete 30 minutes of i-Ready ELA lessons and 30 minutes of i-Ready math lessons as part of their homework every week. Teachers will check the previous week’s work every Monday. Students can use their @nycstudents account to log into i-Ready by visiting clever.com.

If logging in on an iPad, you must first download and login to the Clever app. You can then launch i-Ready from Clever and students will be logged in. Download this information sheet for more detailed instructions.
