Why a counseling newsletter?

The counseling department works hard to support student's academic, social, and career development in many ways. We want to provide all stakeholders the opportunity to connect with us and see the variety of programs we offer at KC and throughout the community.

Important Announcements

  • Google Classroom Enrollment: All students should join their graduating year Google Classroom for important announcements. Juniors and Seniors, please also join the KC Counselor Google Classroom for vital resources and announcements as you prepare for graduation.

  • Trimester 3 will begin on March 10th. Students will have access to their schedules in PowerSchool at least a day prior to that date.

Schedule Change Requests for Trimester 3:
  • Counselors will prioritize meeting with students that do not have a full schedule, do not have classes they need to graduate, and are in classes they already took. If you are in one of these situations, you can email your counselor or stop by the main office during the first week of the trimester during the hour of the course you need to change.

  • Elective changes or other changes are last on the priority list and will not be addressed until later the first week and into the second week of the trimester.

Celebrations from Trimester 2

CTE/EFA/EMC Presentations

Staff from KRESA Career Technical Education, Education for the Arts, and Early Middle College programs were at KC during the week of January 13th. They presented general program information and the application process to all sophomores and juniors. Students can learn more about the programs offered next school year at each link listed above. Counselors will be reviewing applications in February and notifying students in April.

Career Development Classroom Lessons

All students are required to create and update their Educational Development Plan (EDP) throughout high school. This plan serves as a guide to students and counselors throughout their 4 years at Central; students should connect their educational experience at KC with their own unique career vision and pathway. Counselors collaborated with freshman and sophomore social studies teachers to provide a lessons on self-awareness, personality style, and connecting that self-awareness to their career vision. All students logged their experience in Xello, the computer based program where students create and edit their EDP and can access an abundance of information on careers and education.

FAFSA Support

Counselors partnered with Western Michigan University and KVCC to offer FAFSA support to students and families during conferences. Thank you to those that took advantage of the WMU representative's expertise and attended!

Middle School Visits

Counselors visited all KPS Middle Schools during the week of February 3rd. Counselors presented general information about Kalamazoo Central, provided information on how to prepare to successfully transition to high school, and gave students a chance to request the elective courses they are interested in taking next year.
