Welcome back, North families! I am excited to start my fourth year in Pennridge School District and second year here at North Middle School! This summer I got to do some traveling, reading, and relaxing on the beach, which has left me feeling refreshed and ready to start another school year. I can’t wait to see all of my returning students and meet all of our new sixth graders. I look forward to another great school year ahead!

Nurses' Corner

Robin Young, ryoung@pennridge.org

Barbara Curtin, bcurtin@pennridge.org

Required Immunizations: The following immunizations must be completed before your child can be admitted into 7th grade. Medical or religious exceptions to this requirement can be explained by the school nurse and require a parent/guardian signature:

  • 1 dose of tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap)
  • 1 dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV)

If immunization records, exemption (Exemption Form), or proof of appointment to receive vaccinations are not provided to nursing, your child will be excluded from school on the 6th day of school. Nursing would have reached out to you if these immunizations were missing.

Required Examinations: Pennsylvania mandates the following health examinations as indicated:

  • Physicals: school entry, grade 6 and grade 11(Physical Exam Form)
  • Dental: school entry and grade 7 (Dental Exam Form)

Parents are urged to have physical and dental examinations completed by their family physician or dentist and submitted prior to September 30 of the year that they are due. A completed exam dated no earlier than one year prior to the first day of the required grade is acceptable.

Injuries: If your child sustains an injury requiring gym, sports and/or recess exclusion, a note from their physician if required. When your child has recovered from their injury a medical clearance note will need to be provided. Please hand notes into nursing and information will be communicated accordingly.

Communicable Diseases: It is imperative that the health office be notified if your child contracts a communicable disease. Children are excluded from school for the following common diseases:

  • Chicken Pox: excluded until at least six days after the last outbreak of “pox”.
  • Conjunctivitis, Acute (“Pink Eye”): excluded until prescribed treatment for 24 hours.
  • Head Lice: Excluded until treated with a pediculocide shampoo and combed for nit removal. Students must be checked by the school nurse before being readmitted to school and must be nit free.
  • Impetigo: excluded until judged non-infective by the child’s physician.
  • Measles: excluded until four days from onset of rash.
  • Mumps: excluded nine days from the onset or until swelling subsides.
  • Pertussis (Whooping Cough): excluded four weeks from onset or seven days from start of antibiotic treatment.
  • Ringworm: excluded until treatment begins.
  • Rubella (German Measles): excluded four days from the onset of rash.
  • Scabies: excluded until determined to be non-infective by the child's physician.
  • Shingles: excluded until judged non-infective by the child’s physician (all lesions must be crusted over).
  • Streptococcal Pharyngitis (Strep Throat and Scarlet Fever): excluded until 24 hours after treatment has begun.

Pennridge also reserves the right to exclude children from school based on the following criteria:

  • Illness that prevents the child from participating in activities (such as diarrhea and vomiting)
  • Fever (100 degrees or higher). Students may not return to school until free of fever without fever reducing medication for 24 hours.

Please contact the nurses office with any questions, 215-453-6932 extension 851010.

PBIS and our RAMS

This year will be our second year implementing our RAMS program at North Middle School. It is a PBIS, short for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, program designed to reward good behavior for our students by catching them at their best. When observed doing a good deed or following the rules, students will earn a ticket and can place it on our RAMS 100 board. Every time the board is filled, ten students will be selected at random to receive a prize of their choice .The tickets remaining are pulled and put into our "Second Chance Drawing" bin for other opportunities throughout the year. Our acronym to remember our good behavior is RAMS -- be Respectful, Accountable, Motivated, and Safe. Ask you child about our kickoff assembly from the first day of school!

What is Canvas?

Canvas is a Learning Management System utilized by Pennridge School District in the secondary schools. If your child is in sixth grade, Canvas will be new to them. Each grade level has been set up with their own Class of ... course in Canvas. This course will have announcements, links to information, and important dates for the students will appear on their Canvas calendar through their grade-level specific course. In addition to this course, their teachers will have courses and share assignments, notes, and important information for their content via Canvas. Encourage your child to check Canvas regularly, especially if they are absent!

Ms. Amy Salla, 7th & 8th Grade Science

North welcomes Ms. Salla! This year marks her 22nd year in education, and she is thrilled to continue sharing her love and passion for science with students. Science has always been a true passion of hers, with chemistry being her favorite area of science. She especially enjoys helping students explore how and why things work and watching their curiosity grow through hands-on learning and discovery.

Outside of school, she is a proud mom to two sons, ages 21 and 12, who keep her busy and on the go! She also enjoys volunteering on sports organization boards, supporting youth athletics and staying involved in her community. When she’s not teaching or volunteering, she loves spending time with her family and enjoying the outdoors. She is looking forward to getting to know the students, families, and staff and is excited for a wonderful year ahead!
