The NICC College and Career Connection, a member of the Iowa Intermediary Network, hosted the first High-Demand Skilled Trades event for local high school juniors and seniors last Tuesday, Feb. 14. Approximately 150 students from 15 school districts participated in the event at the Community Event Center at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds. Mr. Fair took junior students from Riceville.

Students learned more about high-demand skilled trades occupations and engage in hands-on activities in the skilled trades. Some large equipment, including a cement mixer and dump truck, were on-site for students to view in person. Participating businesses included JB Holland, Croell, Reilly Construction, Voltmer Electric, Decorah Electric, Casper Plumbing & Heating, Geo-Tech, West Union Trenching, Finholdt, Wicks Construction, Taylor Construction, Bodensteiner Implement and others.

Industrial Technology Classes - CTE Industrial Technology Classes - CTE

Students who choose to take Industrial Technology classes at Riceville have the opportunity to learn about many different skills needed to enter the workforce in the skilled trades industry. Welding classes are offered which gives students exposure to MIG, TIG, shielded ARC and gas welding. They also are given the opportunity to use plasma cutters and oxy-acetylene torches, along with many other metal working tools.

There are carpentry classes offered, which allows students to build structures such as sheds and garages. Electrical and plumbing skills are also taught in classes to gain interest and knowledge in these fields.

AutoCad and drafting are also offered to gain a better understanding in designing and drawing floor plans and mechanical drawings. In addition to these classes offered at the high school level, middle school students are introduced to these skills in their exploratory classes. With the high demand for skilled workers needed today, Riceville’s Industrial Technology program is a great place to start.

CONSERVATION CLASS GUEST SPEAKER CONSERVATION CLASS GUEST SPEAKER

On Wednesday, February 15, the conservation class had the honor of hearing a presentation about hunting from a local, avid outdoorsman. Tyler Smith shared his hunting expertise and appreciation for nature. He discussed different hunting seasons in Iowa and focused on hunting large game. He expressed that bow hunting was his passion and he provided the students with archery tactics. Tyler also shared stories about his trips to Colorado to hunt elk, mule deer, and black bear. He also spoke with the class about antler growth and he provided specimens for the students to view including elk, white-tailed deer, mule deer, and moose. Furthermore, Tyler expressed the value of hunting in our conservation efforts and reminded the students to get out and enjoy our local environments. Thank you for your time, Tyler, and we hope you will join us again to discuss upland game bird hunting. A special thank you to Gunnar Smith for helping organize the presentation for our class.
