HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

This month we honor and celebrate the incredible contributions, traditions and backgrounds of our staff, students and community who represent our Hispanic and Latino culture and identity. Not only do we recognize several Independence days (including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Chile and Mexico) this month, but it is also a month to recognize that the fabric of our community continues to be woven with the rich and wonderful influence and impact of our Hispanic and Latino families, representing a multitude of countries, cultures and lived experiences. Please join me in expressing not only appreciation for Hispanic Heritage Month, but also a deep level of respect for our friends, colleagues and family who are part of this amazing tapestry. Let us remember this quote by Sonia Sotomaryo, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court," It is important for all of us to appreciate where we come from and how that history has really shaped us in ways that we might not understand."

Let's appreciate each other deeply, this month and every month!

INTO THE BLUE INTO THE BLUE

Into the Blue was an amazing experience for our freshman to ease into the transition to high school that took place at Camp Wooten in the Blue Mountains. This experience gave students the opportunity to complete up to five community service hours as well participating in camp like activities such as water safety/canoeing/fishing, archery, hiking, low ropes course and art/games. While being there, WaHi teacher Kyle Eggers and volunteer Shane Prudente got students engaged in the skits they performed. Nutrition Services Director Kara Carlson said, "Into the Blue is such a unique opportunity for our kitchen staff to connect with students in a different setting. WaHi's Kitchen Manager Kathy Farmer and Garrison Middle School's Kitchen Manager Taren Hartzheim went above and beyond to ensure the students were fed some high quality, homemade meals while at camp!" Thank you to Walla Walla Public Schools Foundation, staff and volunteers who helped make this possible for students to have an unforgettable experience!

Student Experiences at Into the Blue

"Into the Blue was really fun and I enjoyed it even though it rained. The experience allowed me to reconnect with old friends that I hadn't seen since elementary school. The hike was long but a fun experience with friends and the mountain views were pretty. The best part was seeing my favorite teachers Mr. Heezen and Mr. Wise participating in the activities with us and we were also all given free hoodies (wearing her hoodie). I am happy that it was open to all freshmen at no cost no matter what their financial status was."~ Emelyn Mata Cruzaley, WaHi Freshman

"I am used to going out to the mountains with my family so it was fun to experience this with my friends and I am glad that we were able to bunk together. My favorite part was meeting new people, the different activity stations and the nature hike. During the bonfire each team was asked to sing karaoke and our team was assigned California Girls by Katy Perry. I think everyone should take time to enjoy the outdoors. It is calming and soothing to be out in nature and it's important for our overall health."~ Nathan Bell, WaHi Freshman

SELF-CARE SELF-CARE

As fall comes our way, consider things like reading a good book, going for walks, spending time with friends you haven't seen in a while, crafting or exploring new hobbies. Spend this season paying attention to the things you genuinely enjoy doing and do them.

"Your individuality is important, but so is belonging. Recognize the parts of your culture that have shaped your past, and the parts you want to carry with you into the future.”- Sol Peralta
