Greetings, Jefferson Families and Friends.

TESTING

We are right in the heart of our Spring Testing Window which means the end of school is right around the corner. We have seen some significant growth in many students in our MAPS testing. Many students hit their goals and we are so excited for them.

Our third, fourth, and fifth graders are now working on their State NSCAS testing. I am hoping to see some great results from those as well.

ELO/Summer School

The summer ELO Reading program will start after school ends. It will be at Lincoln Elementary School this year as we will be doing a deep cleaning at Jefferson School this summer. We will welcome the program back next summer. The program is by invitation only for Kindergarten through third grade students. If you have not returned your permission form in, please do so ASAP. We have to set up our technology and our staffing for the program based upon the number of participants. We need a head count no later than Friday of this week.

Senator Jacobson

Senator Jacobson stopped by Jefferson Elementary on Monday, April 24, to award Mrs. Kara Hahn with a proclamation for being named Nebraska Outstanding Counselor of the Year. The proclamation was signed by every Nebraska State Senator. We held a short assembly to both welcome the Senator and to honor Mrs. hahn.

Severe Weather Awareness Poster Winners

Lincoln County hosts an annual Severe Weather Awareness Poster Contest each year. This year 3rd Grader Jaylee Gragg won first place while Aaralynn Larson-Howell placed fourth. The contest is open to all schools within Lincoln County. The winning posters are hung in the State Capital Building in Lincoln, NE. Congratulations, girls!

Behaviors

April and May bring with them weather changes and behavioral changes. With the weather being unpredictable from one day to the next, school behaviors in students seem to be just as temperamental. It is important to check the weather daily so your students are dressed appropriately in the mornings for Walking Club. Equally important is still following routines at home so that your students get enough rest at night. The sun stays out a little longer, the days seemingly get a little warmer, and everyone is going a little stir crazy wanting to be outside in the warmth. Please remind your students of the importance of following the rules and doing the right thing at school. Bad behavior affects the entire class from the teacher to the other students. A lot of instructional time can be lost with each behavioral incident. When a teacher has to give a student more attention due to a behavior, it takes away the attention from another student who is also deserving to receive it from a teacher.

Goodbyes & Hellos

With the end of a school year also comes a time of saying goodbye to staff that will be moving on and saying hello to new staff that will be arriving in the fall. Ms. Missy Schult will be heading to the Omaha area to continue teaching. Ms. Karissa Cox will also be moving to the Omaha area as a SPED teacher. Mrs. Michelle Strickland will be moving over to Cody Elementary School. We are still needing to fill a couple of positions but I am confident we will have good people to fill all of those shoes. We have filled the PE position for next year with Mr. Mathew Denker from Sydney, NE. Thanks to all of these teachers for all of their service to Jefferson Elementary School, including Mr. Matthew Epley for filling in for PE this year.

Notes from the Nurse Notes from the Nurse

Don't forget to pick up medicine!

All medications, including inhalers, and Epipens that have been brought to school during this school year must be picked up by a parent/guardian by 1:00 PM on Tuesday, May 23rd.

Medications that have not been picked up by the last day of school will be disposed of by the nurse. Medications cannot be stored at school during the summer months. In order to ensure the safety of students, medications will not be sent home with students.

PBIS PBIS

Reminder to all students, parents, and staff. PBIS is a support team that assists students in making positive choices and environments for learning. This month we are reviewing and focusing on appropriate voice levels and when to use them, hallway expectations to assist with encouraging engagement in the classroom, and classroom expectations that create positive and interactive learning environments.

Jefferson Teachers and Staff are excited to use our new "Wild Card" room for incentives for grades and positive behavior. Every class will have the chance to utilize this new room!

Second grade, Mrs. Paul's class, used the wild card room to have a "Reading Shower" to celebrate their future success before they take their MAPS test. They had punch and treats and did some Kahoot to review for it.
