Apply to SUNY for FREE

Save money by applying to up to five SUNY schools with no application fee from October 19th - November 2nd. If you're wondering which SUNY is the best fit for you, visit the SUNY website to get our questions answered!

Applying Early Action or Early Decision

Many colleges allow you to apply under an "Early Decision" or "Early Action" program. Generally, this means you have to apply earlier than other applicants; however, you also find out about their admissions decision earlier. Remember, Early Decision is a binding commitment by you to the college of your decision to attend if admitted and offered a satisfactory financial aid package. Early Action is similar to Early Decision, but the binding commitment by you to the college is not required until the spring / National College Decision Day (around May 1). While these types of programs are not for everyone, if you are applying under Early Action or Early Decision with a deadline of October 15th, November 1st or November 15th, please be sure to see your counselor ASAP to review your application and submission of materials!

Application Essay

TIPS TO MAKE YOUR ESSAY STAND OUT AMONG THE CROWD!

Your college essay is the purest part of your application! Here are some tips to set yours apart:

  1. Brainstorm and outline your ideas before you start the writing process.
  2. Be sure to tell a story that grabs the readers attention and engages them!
  3. Be truthful and represent yourself in the best way possible; be passionate and personal.
  4. Tell the reader something they can't gain from reviewing your application.
  5. Use simple language and tone; correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation are a must.
  6. Don't exceed the word limit, if one is given.
  7. Write a rough draft ... revise it ... edit it ... proofread it ... polish it ... then submit it!

Scholarships

Dollars for Scholars: it is never too early to start your Dollars for Scholars online application! Our local chapter gives out thousands of dollars in scholarships at our graduation ceremony for eligible students. The Schuylerville online application can be found here.

  • Once you are on the home page, click on the 'Students and Parents' tab at the top of the page.
  • On this next page, under Student and Parent Login, click on the red Login. This will open the Scholarship America Dollars for Scholars Student Center. You should see 'Don't have an account yet? Create one here'.
  • After clicking on that link in Schuylerville Junior-Senior High School, under 'High School Name' and click on the blue link that reads 'Choose this school'.
  • You will then be directed to several pages of info that students need to fill in...only those with asterisks are required.

For questions about the Dollars for Scholars Program, please contact your counselor.

FAFSA - Now Open!

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is open! There are a few important changes to the FAFSA this year.

  1. For the first time ever, The FAFSA will provide real-time results. This means a student and their family should be able to register, complete the FAFSA, and learn Pell eligibility in one sitting.
  2. Students may scan a QR code to send their parent a customized text message inviting them to join their FAFSA form. A crucial step in the financial aid process is for a parent/contributor to complete their portion of the form.
You may start your FAFSA here. Completing the FAFSA is only one step to accessing financial aid for New York students. Students should also complete the New York State TAP application to ensure they are considered for available state financial aid.

PSAT Information for Juniors

Interested 11th graders, along with 10th graders who are enrolled in English 10 Honors and/or Algebra II, will be administered the PSAT/NMSQT examination on Thursday, October 15th in the high school at 8:00 a.m. The test will be administered digitally in accordance with College Board guidelines.

The PSAT/NMSQT is a standardized test that provides first hand practice for the SAT. It measures critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills and writing skills that students have developed over the course of their education. The PSAT serves as a valuable tool because it allows students, parents/guardians and counselors the opportunity to see where additional preparation may be needed as students ready themselves for the SAT. In addition, many students who take this practice exam also feel more prepared when they go to take the SAT.

For high school juniors, the PSAT also doubles as the NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), which automatically qualifies students who have obtained high scores on the verbal, math and writing portion of the PSAT for scholarships.

Those students who wish to take the PSAT are to sign up with Mrs. Lyon in the Student Services no later than Monday, October 5th. The cost for the PSAT is $18.00. Checks can be made payable to Schuylerville Central School and should be submitted when signing up for the test. Students who are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch will obtain a fee waiver.

If you have any questions, or concerns, please do not hesitate to call us at (518) 695-3255 ext. 2239.
