Volunteer Spotlight
Mr. Ray Wong (parent of 5th grader and 3rd grader)
The Walteria volunteer of the week is Mr. Raymond Wong, our Adventures in Art Lead Volunteer. Mr. Wong has spent an enormous amount of time dedicated to structuring a thriving arts program that is all parent run and facilitated. He has built a strong community of parent volunteers who are excited to enrich the wildcat experience for all our students. His support makes a big difference in the lives of our students and also inspires our own teachers and staff to give back. Here are a few words about why Mr. Wong volunteers.
1. Why did you decide to volunteer at Walteria?
I had time. Five years ago, when my son was in Mrs. Rohde's Kindergarten class, I volunteered to help with Chromebooks. That led to getting to know other parents and students and I became involved in the Adventures in Art program.
2. What do you love about volunteering?
I love being able to see the students working in their classrooms. I also have really enjoyed getting to know the other parents and teachers. I also love photography. I try to take pictures of students and their art work or in the classroom or during a classroom party. Getting these pictures to the parents that couldn't be there gives them a glimpse that their child is in a vibrant and happy space.
3. What is one fun or memorable moment about your volunteer time?
A fun moment was when I chaperoned for a field trip to watch Wonder. Watching all the 5th grade students (who had read the book Wonder and were investing in the characters) cheer wildly and clap their hands every time a main character's story arc began or the characters choosing to be kind.
4. What advice would you give to people considering volunteering at Walteria?
My advice would be to start off with something that you feel comfortable with, whether that may be the amount of time you volunteer or the area/activity you choose. Once you feel more comfortable and are interested, there are so many great ways to volunteer and help the school.
