Rattler NewsNewsletter for the Week of August 7th, 2023

Message from Mrs. Chavira, Campus Principal

Rattler Community,

I want to start by thanking you for your patience and support during the start of the year. As with any year, it takes a few days for our students and community to return to our systems and for the campus to adjust to any changes. This year has started very well and we will continue to work diligently to continue to do what is best for our Rattlers.

How was your child's week? It has been great to see so many smiles and excited Rattlers ready to start their school year. For some of our Rattlers, transitioning back to school or attending as a first experience can be difficult. This is part of normal development for some students. This Monday, we are preparing for a slight regression and we will continue to support our students to acclimate to their school routines. Below I am including an article that provides 7 strategies to support your child's transition to school. Know that we continue to be here to comfort and celebrate the successes in their transitions.

Thank you again Rattler Community for your support and welcome back to an amazing school year.

Respectfully,

Cristina Sanchez-Chavira

Proud Principal of Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary

Welcome Back - A message from Superintendent Nate Carman, Ed.D. - First Day of School 2023-2024

Have you filled out your lunch status application?

The 2023-2024 meal application is now available online. We ask that all families complete the lunch application either by inputting all required information or selecting the option of 'Do not qualify' to decline the determination. If you have multiple children within the district, only one application is required as you will be able to add the information for all of your students regardless of what campus they attend.

This application not only determines eligibility for free or reduced lunch but also:

  1. Helps the government determine if a campus as a whole should receive free lunch based on the number of those who participate in special programs (i.e. SNAP, TNAF..)
  2. This accountability is used to determine the amount of Title I funds (Federal dollars) our campus will be allotted every school year that is used for ALL students specifically for academics such as through tutoring, additional resources, and special programs.

We thank you for taking a moment to help us account for all of our families. You will find the direct link to the application as well as a link to the district announcement that includes eligibility information. Should you need assistance, please reach out to us. Thank you again.

Lunch Balances and pay for lunch on My SchoolBucks

Our Cafeteria Manager will begin sending notifications out to those who currently hold a negative balance for lunch charges as our campus has accumulated almost $1000 from the end of last year to the start of the year. Please review the attached information to set up your MySchoolBucks account to monitor your child's lunch balance and make payments as needed.

Breakfast will continue to be free for all students while lunch is $2.10 per day at the elementary.

You will need your child's student ID number after creating the account. The front office can assist you with obtaining that by calling 915-937-7100.

You can also visit the front office to deposit cash into the cafeteria mailbox. Please note that the only way to check your child's balance is through this website, The front office staff do not have access to this information.

Arriving on time

Systems are working and this week we will begin to work on arriving on time. Students' tardiness will go into effect soon. Note the following

  • Doors and Gates will open at 7:00 am
  • First Bell will ring at 7:30 am
  • MUSIC will play over the intercom at 7:40 for the last 5 minutes before the tardy bell.
  • Tardy Bell will ring at 7:45
  • Breakfast in the classroom will be served from 7:30-7:45 am
  • Instruction will start promptly at 7:45

Thank you, parents, for not blocking our walkways and stopping at the endpoints. This helps us have a visual of the students coming in and support any students that need guidance.

Devices for New Students

We have started distributing devices to new and returning students. If you are in need of a device because you are new or it was in repair, please notify your child's teacher. They will follow up with our technology department and make accommodations until they receive their device.

All 2nd-grade and PK students will receive their IPADs or laptops as soon as they arrive from the district. Currently, we are working on providing our current devices to new students in Kinder, 1st, 3rd through 5th.

Attendance Reminders

We know our students will become ill throughout the year. For this reason, it is important that when our students are healthy, they are attending school every day. Lost instructional days do not only impact your child's education but also the education and dynamics of all students in the classroom. For this reason, MAKING EVERYDAY Count is critical for the success of your child and all students on campus.

The state of Texas holds administrators and parents accountable for attending school daily. At 5 absences or tardies, you will be asked to have a meeting with administration to make sure we are working together to educate your child. Please help support our teachers by bringing in your children ready to learn. We thank you for making attendance a priority.

When your child is out, you can email a personal note and/or doctors release to: attendancesueshook@sisd.net

Procedures for Inclement Weather

What do we do if it is raining during dismissal? In the event of inclement weather, we will share this information with our community through TEXT, EMAIL, and CLASSDOJO.

Decisions for inclement weather are made no later than 2:15 pm for ALL grade levels.

This means that we may call for inclement weather and the weather will immediately clear OR we may not call for inclement weather on time. Note that we use forecasts, radar maps, and national/local advisories to make decisions. Inclement weather can be called in the event of precipitation, low temperatures, or high winds.

2:45 Dismissal

PK and Kinder

  • Students will be picked up in their classrooms. Side doors for arrival will be opened. All parents will have to park and enter the building to pick up their child from their classroom.

3:15 Dismissal: All siblings will report to their younger siblings' classroom

1st -3rd

  • All main building doors will open and parents will come in to pick up their child from the classroom.
4th and 5th grade
  • Students will be in the modular building. Please use your car tags so that we can call students out and they will exit from the modular to car pick up. This process will take a little longer.

Please be patient during this process. Student safety is the priority.

Traffic

Student Safety and Community Safety is our priority. It takes a second for an accident to occur and for this reason, we need to make sure that we have a clear mind and are not rushed when we approach our campus.

General

  • Remember to be courteous to all drivers.
  • Please refrain from honking or cutting drivers off. We need to always be courteous to each other. We are part of the same community.
  • We understand that we do not have enough parking for all parents. All schools struggle with parking. Please be aware of where you are driving and who is around you.
  • Always use crosswalks or approach administration or support personnel to cross you. We are our children's roll models. Would you like your child to think it is safe to cross anywhere down a street?

Car Drop-Off Etiquette

Car drop-off must be used by students that are independent enough to exit their vehicles with their backpacks on. Support your parent community by doing the following.

  • Always remain in your vehicle. *If you need to exit your vehicle to help your child, then your option should be to park and walk your child.
  • Always park at the top of the lane, first sign. Please do not stop at the door walkway. This limits the number of kids that can exit the vehicle.
  • Make sure students are ready to exit the vehicle. If your child requires much assistance from you, please park as you are encouraged to not exit your vehicle.

Car-pick-up Etiquette

  • Always display on your DASHBOARD your YELLOW car sign. If you do not have a car sign, please park to pick up your child.
  • Do not exit your vehicle. Always remain in your vehicle. We will bring your child to you.
  • Never park in our pick-up area
  • Do not utilize the exterior or 2nd lane to have kids run to you OR pass the vehicles before you.

In the event you feel a driver or parent is impacting student, please do not engage. Notify administration. We will do the following.

  • The administration will contact the parent and advise them of proper procedures
  • Second or severe offense: Vehicle information will be given to police service.

Thank you, Rattler Community, for your support. Let us make sure we keep our Rattlers safe.

Car -pick up Signs

Car Pick Up Signs are required for the Pick Up Lane. Additional signs can be picked up from the Front Office or requested through Classojo to be sent home. Please use a black marker to write your child’s name and teacher and hang your sign on your passenger side visor so we may see it at a distance to ensure your child is ready for you when you pull up to the assigned number.

Would you like to be a Parent Volunteer?

Are you interested in becoming a volunteer? While we are still finalizing our date for the informational meeting, you can complete your district background check now through this link. https://my.sisd.net/public_apps/dps-cch-public/#!/home/

Background checks must be done yearly with them being valid from July 1 to June 30 of the current school year.

For our campus, you will not only need to be cleared by the district but also attend one of our orientations that will be held throughout the school year. We will hold these both mornings and evenings to accommodate all parents. These orientations will allow you to learn about the process of coming into the campus and the various opportunities available. More information about these orientations will be shared once finalized.

We would love to have your help!
