Classroom Spotlight: Grade 7 Social Studies
7th grade students “visited” Asia on one of the world’s largest maps. The National Geographic Society map, measuring 32 feet by 37 feet, gives student explorers a fun, interactive experience through rich content and exciting activities that enliven the study of geography. The map was on loan to OMS on March 4th, 5th, and 6th through Bridgewater State University’s Center for Advancement of STEM Education. Each of the grade 7 teams had a day exploring the map. They have borrowed several of the maps in the past and “Simon Says” was the favorite game of the day.
National Geographic’s Giant Traveling Maps program was introduced in 2006 with a map of Africa created after National Geographic magazine’s 2005 special issue devoted entirely to that continent. Since then the program expanded to include maps of North America, Asia and South America, Europe, and the Pacific Ocean. Although the maps are no longer in print, Bridgewater State University’s Center for Advancement of STEM Education has a collection that they loaned out for free to schools and other civic organizations.
Students on teams 7A, 7B, and 7C all had classes in the Learning Commons this week so they could interact with the giant map. Mrs. Killion's class (7B) is pictured above.
