Author Visit with Kelly DiPucchio

On Friday, November 20, bestselling children's author, Kelly DiPucchio spent the day at East Oakview. She spent time talking with each grade about what it's like to be an author. She shared many of her books and how she got the ideas for them. Students had time to ask questions. Many students preordered her books or purchased them at the book fair. Kelly took time to talk with individual students and sign their books. Special thanks to the East Oakview PTC for helping to fund this special day!

Dudley's Adventure

Dudley, the bear, is on an amazing adventure. In early October, he was sent from our school to an elementary school in Dublin, Ohio. From there, he will be sent to various schools across the country. While at these schools, teachers and students will email, tweet and share what Dudley is doing...and what he's reading. We are keeping track of all the places he is visiting, as well as, all of his reading recommendations.

Book Fair--A Monster Good Time

We had a MONSTER of a book fair in November. Profits from the fair helped to pay for our author visit and will allow us to purchase new books for the library.

Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast Day

We had a school-wide celebration of Josh Funk's new picture book Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast. After learning about the book in library class students celebrated with a Pancake/French Toast lunch (Thank you Mrs. Kramer!). While eating, students enjoyed a video message from author, Josh Funk (see below). Second graders had the opportunity to have a Skype visit with Josh later that afternoon.

Take a look at the book trailer (below). Author, Josh Funk is actually singing the song!

National Picture Book Month and Mock Caldecott

November is National Picture Book Month! As part of our celebration, first-fourth graders began our mock Caldecott unit. The Randolph Caldecott medal is awarded to the best illustrated picture book each year. Students will use "kid-friendly" versions of the actual judging criteria to evaluate twelve picture books that could potentially win this year's Caldecott medal.

Mock Newbery

Fourth graders had the opportunity to sign up to be entered for the possibility of participating in this year's Mock Newbery Club. The Newbery Award is given each year to the "most distinguished contribution to American literature for children". Twelve students were chosen to participate. Students will read from twelve Newbery worthy novels and will participate (with students from West Oakview and North Oakview) as part of Northview's Mock Newbery Committee. Stay tuned for more information.
