Physical Education Update

Physical education has been transitioning back to a more traditional feel with games and equipment being added back into the curriculum after the restrictions last year. The fitness center is open again to students and Project Adventure courses have returned to the experiential learning experiences Mr. Joyce has missed during the pandemic.

Personal Fitness & Wellness: Personal Fitness and Wellness has returned to the fitness center where students have been exploring different exercises that work on improving various muscle groups. Each class involves a specified workout and students are expected to record their progress on their workout logs. Classes have also begun digging deeper and completing personal assessments on each health-related component of fitness. Most recently, students engaged in a flexibility lab, which may be used at a later point to design personalized SMART Goals in order to improve overall personal flexibility and posture.

Net/Wall & Team Sports: Net/Wall and Team Sports have been outside enjoying the beautiful fall weather. Our students have been learning and participating in our Tennis unit. Our focus has been learning and practicing the necessary skills to participate in competitive/cooperative gameplay. The skills taught have been forehand, backhand, bounce serve, overhead serve, and defending space. In addition to learning the skills, we have been learning the basic rules, boundary lines, and scoring for singles and doubles gameplay. Our students will have the opportunity to compete in a doubles tournament and continue to focus on the fundamental skills necessary for lifelong participation in tennis.

Project Adventure: Project Adventure classes are wrapping up quarter one by participating in trust activities and low element initiatives. Some of the activities they have been participating in are: partner trust falls, team trust falls, swinging all aboard, and the traversing multi swing. One class can be seen in these pictures performing a team trust fall and crossing the traversing multi-swing. Just around the corner is quarter two, which will be the start of our climbing unit. The quarter will begin with students learning how to tie climbing knots.

Health Update

Health and Wellness classes have been off to a great start for the 2021-2022 academic year. Students have just completed their opening units discussing topics that impact our overall health and wellness. Students are now transitioning to focus on more specific topics related to health and wellness. One of the focuses of our upcoming topics will be in the area of mental/emotional health. During this unit, students will explore different elements that can have positive, or negative, impacts on our mental health. Students will identify different coping strategies that may be helpful when going through daily stress or when faced with difficult times. As a part of this unit, students also have the opportunity to take part in a special lesson facilitated by our school social worker. This lesson focuses specifically on depression awareness and suicide prevention. Students are informed that depression is a very treatable condition, and that suicide is a highly preventable tragedy. Students engage in open discussion and identify the different signs or symptoms associated with depression, and are encouraged to seek help from a trusted adult if they were to notice any of these signs or symptoms in themselves, or in any of their peers. Students are provided a list of in-building counselors and resources in case more assistance is needed.

The first quarter will wrap up shortly after the end of our mental/emotional health unit. Entering the second quarter, students will explore topics related to nutrition, human sexuality, and the negative effects of substance abuse.

Wellness Tip

Get in on the pumpkin trend before it is too late!

Did you know, just like their orange cousins, the carrot and the sweet potato, pumpkins are rich in beta carotene. Your body changes this antioxidant to vitamin A. You need vitamin A to see, ward off germs, and for your reproductive system to work the way it should. It also helps your heart, lungs, kidneys, and other organs stay healthy.

Health Tip

November 21, 2021, is International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, also known as Survivor Day. This day always falls on the Saturday before Thanksgiving and is designated as a day when friends and family of those who have lost their lives to suicide can join for healing and support.

Mental health has been a big area of focus in the health and wellness community. Whether it is feeling the daily stress in our lives, or major life stressors we are sometimes faced with, it is important for us to take care of ourselves and others on a mental/emotional level. If you feel yourself struggling, or notice struggles within someone else, it is important to receive support in an appropriate way. It is also important for us to care for ourselves on a daily basis, and this can be done by setting time aside in our days for some self-care. This can be done in many ways, such as reading a book, exercising with a friend, listening to music, or taking part in any other activity that brings you joy. While it is easy to get caught up in the busy schedules life throws at us, be sure to set some time aside to care for yourself and others on a mental/emotional level.
