As we wind down to the end of the first quarter, we want to send a friendly reminder to keep working on good habits. Checking StudentVUE/ParentVUE once a week will help you stay up to date with any missing assignments or possible re-take opportunities. Retakes are a great way to help increase your overall grade! If you would like a little extra help, try our homework club. There is a one-time form that needs to be completed before the first time joining the homework club. Our teachers are always ready to help, you just have to ask!

8th Grade Student & Parents: The high school specialty programs application will open November 1st, 2024 and close February 1st, 2025. Your students recently had one of our counselors present information about the programs and the process. The first link in our resource section will take you directly to the PWCS High School Specialty website. Here you will find information about each program, including their specific information nights. There will be an entire newsletter sent out to all of our 8th grade students and parents with links to each program as well. Be sure to check the county's website for the most up-to-date information.

Our school counseling department is here to support your success! Have a problem with a friend? We can help with that! Having a hard time with organizing your school work? We can help with that! Please reach out so that we can assist you. If we are unavailable, students can send us an email request or come to the counseling suite lobby to fill out the request form on the Ipad. We strive to see students that have completed a request within the same school day or following school day. As always, if you have any concerns, please reach out to share. We are happy to help!

World Kindness Day - Nov. 13th
Month of the Military Family
zoom_out_map

As a Virginia Purple Star School, GVMS is proud to share that November is designated the National Veterans and Military Family Month. GVMS thanks our military families for their support of our service members and the nation. Military life imposes unique challenges and sacrifices which our military connected families meet with resiliency and courage. We also thank our Veterans for their service and commitment to supporting and protecting our nation, oftentimes long after their office military service has ended.

The Purple Star School honor is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. Through this program we have Purple Star Peers who serve as a "first friend" for military connected students transferring to GVMS. Purple Star Peer duties include:

  1. Being a warm and friendly face welcoming the military-connected student to GVMS.
  2. Providing a tour and orientation of the building, lockers, cafeteria (how to buy lunch), PE (we dress out etc.)

  3. Being a lunch buddy.

  4. Checking in on them throughout the days and weeks that follow their arrival.
  5. Participating in service projects and military holiday recognitions.

Students interested in joining the Purple Star Peers should contact Mrs. Abbott in the School Counseling office or by email at abbotte@pwcs.edu.

The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness

In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s. He presents more than a dozen mechanisms by which this “great rewiring of childhood” has interfered with children’s social and neurological development, covering everything from sleep deprivation to attention fragmentation, addiction, loneliness, social contagion, social comparison, and perfectionism. He explains why social media damages girls more than boys and why boys have been withdrawing from the real world into the virtual world, with disastrous consequences for themselves, their families, and their societies.

Most important, Haidt issues a clear call to action. He diagnoses the “collective action problems” that trap us, and then proposes four simple rules that might set us free. He describes steps that parents, teachers, schools, tech companies, and governments can take to end the epidemic of mental illness and restore a more humane childhood.

The Anxiety Audit: Seven Sneaky Ways Anxiety Takes Hold and How to Escape Them (Anxiety Series)

Ask people to describe anxiety and they’ll start with the familiar physical symptoms: racing heart, sweaty palms, difficulty breathing. Anxiety, they might add, is “freaking out,” a panic attack, or a frightening loss of control. But anxiety isn’t always what we think it is, especially now. Anxiety has become the new normal, constant and simmering, disguising itself in patterns and responses we don’t even recognize as anxiety. These patterns include:

· Ruminating and worrying (and mistaking it for problem solving)

· Going global, or seeing the world through an overwhelming, all-or-nothing lens

· Isolating and disconnecting,
all too common in our "new normal"

· Creating chaos and “busy-ness”, for example, over-scheduling and multitasking

· Embracing your irritability

· Confusing self-medication with self-care

The Anxiety Audit is a guide for us all: with no overly scientific or diagnostic language--just real talk and time-tested tactics from a respected therapist--it is a relatable and practical guide to untangling yourself from the grips of worry and fear.

Using stories, real-world examples, and helpful dialogues to retrain the way you think and react, trusted anxiety expert Lynn Lyons helps you recognize the sneaky ways these anxious patterns and cycles of worry take hold in your life. By making small and consistent adjustments, you can reverse their negative impacts and move forward with renewed clarity and confidence.
