March is Middle Level Education Month!

March has officially been declared Middle Level Education Month by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the Association of Middle Level Education (AMLE), and other notable national organizations that focus on and support middle level education!

According to the AMLE, Middle Level Education Month is an opportunity to collectively share what makes young adolescents great. Here are three important facts from AMLE about middle level education:

  • The scope and speed of human development in early adolescence is second only to the period from birth to age three. These years represent the greatest inflection point and opportunity to develop young people as critical thinkers and leaders.
  • Young adolescents have so much to offer our communities. They are looking for a place to belong and, when the opportunities are present, are capable of making significant contributions to our communities. Tap into their energy and leadership potential!
  • For our students to be academically and personally successful, a supportive environment both at home and at school is required. Our communities must work together to support our young adolescents!

At Hixson Middle School, we are so very proud to serve our middle school students and their families. Please join us in celebrating Middle Level Education Month!

Student Shout Out!

8th grade Sustainability class student, Perla, wanted to organize a drive that would support the unhoused. She partnered with the local outreach group, Tent Mission STL, to collect coats, socks, blankets, tarps, and other items. She collected enough to fill a car...top to bottom! We are still collecting items up until spring break. If you have anything you would like to donate, please send it to school with your student.

Great job Perla!

USAgain Program

Two green and white collection bins have been placed in the circle drive (side of the building that faces hwy 44). These are for collecting used clothing and shoes. If you have clothes and shoes that you have outgrown or don’t want anymore, please place them in the bins. These items are collected and donated to developing countries around the world. The organization takes the items, bundles them, and sends them to struggling countries. This keeps the clothes out of our landfills and helps people and communities in need. In addition, they also plant a tree every time the bin is filled. Since 2013, they have planted over 800,000 trees! Please help Hixson support this organization with this easy and powerful program.

Gateway to Wellness: Yoga & Mindfulness for Youth - It's a go!

Gateway to Wellness: Yoga and Mindfulness for Youth is a free holistic mental wellness program for school-aged students. The program integrates evidence-based practices of yoga, social emotional learning, and restorative circles. This program aims to support the whole child by helping students cope with anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, and other issues of mental health that are often exasperated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

We have generated enough interest so far to offer this program after school starting on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 from 3:40 pm to 4:20 pm. Please click the link below to express interest in Gateway to Wellness: Yoga and Mindfulness for Youth! It's not too late!

Hixson PTO Update

Volunteers Needed!
The Hixson PTO is looking for volunteers for next school year. Please email if you are interested in serving on the executive board or on a committee: hixsonmiddlepto@gmail.com.

Assorted lumber, Cricut supplies, sewing machines, KitchenAid Mixers, IPad Minis . . .these are a sampling of supplies needed by Hixson teachers, and the Hixson PTO is organizing a collection of these supplies. Does your business have items to donate or sell at reduced cost? Do you have items at home that you don't need anymore? Does your child enjoy FACS/Sustainability and you want to make a special donation of a new sewing machine or chicken food so other students can enjoy these classes as much as your student does?

Please follow these steps:

1. Review the following Google Sheets to see the list of items needed. There are items big and small - ranging from used aluminum cans to new countertops.

2. Enter your name and comments in the far right column (for items with multiple quantities, more than one person can write their name).

3. Contact the teacher BEFORE you make any large purchases.
