Attendance Information Attendance Information

Importance of Excusing Attendance

Students have the right AND the responsibility to make up missed work in the case of an absence. Following an absence, it is the responsibility of the student to make arrangements with the individual teacher(s) to complete the make-up work in a reasonable amount of time. Due to the importance of classroom participation, frequent absences may result in lost educational learning opportunities.

Absences that are considered unexcused may be treated differently than an excused absence by the classroom teacher(s). Please review the class syllabus and speak with teachers for information about how to make up missed work.

Excused Absences By law (ORS 339-065) absences can only be excused for the following reasons:

● Illness (includes medical and mental health appointments)

● Illness of an immediate family member

● An emergency or bereavement.

*Students may be required to bring a note from the physician’s or dental verifying each appointment.

Process for Excusing Absences:

When a student is absent, we ask that the parent / guardians call the school to excuse the absence, or provide a note. If the parent / guardian chooses to provide a note, the student should take it to the Office prior to the day they will be absent, or upon returning from being gone. All absences must be cleared by the parent/guardian within two school days. To excuse a full-day absence by phone, call the 24-hour attendance line at 541-744-6350 (select Option 1) or email mary.gammie@springfield.k12.or.us and include the following: Student’s name, date(s) of absence, reason, and your identity.

When possible, call the attendance line before noon on the day of the absence to deactivate the automatic parent notification phone call.

Student Health Screenings Student Health Screenings

BMS Dental Clinic: February 12th

health screenings are coordinated by Springfield Public Schools (SPS) Health Services and performed each school year for grades K-8. SPS partners with the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation for vision and with the Community Health Centers of Lane County for dental. Please contact your school health aide if you do not want your student to participate in either of the health screenings.

School Health Screenings

Health screenings play an integral part in children’s development and well-being. Because childhood health problems can eventually develop into chronic adult conditions, screenings that students are given in school can help detect potential health problems and improve the overall health of every student.

Healthy students are better learners and routine checks ensure that they are healthy and fit so they can meet their full academic potential. School health screenings help in the early detection of health conditions. SPS collaborates with community partners to provide these screenings for grades K-8 each school year.

For dental screenings, hygienists take a quick look inside the student’s mouth looking for any obvious signs of dental issues. Only students who turn in the permission slips for dental screening will be seen.

For more information, please visit SPS Health Services.

Personal Electronic Device Policy Personal Electronic Device Policy

Please pay close attention to the following information as it is a shift from past practice at Briggs!

Dear BMS Families,

At BMS, your child’s academic and social success is our top priority. To protect the learning environment and ensure that students remain focused during school hours, all personal electronic devices must be powered off and securely stored during the entire school day, from 8:15 a.m. to 3:05 p.m.

In accordance with Executive Order 25-09, students are prohibited from using personal electronic devices on campus during the school day. This includes—but is not limited to—cell phones, smartwatches, wireless earbuds/headphones, tablets, laptops, and gaming devices. Devices must be stored in a zipped backpack or secured classroom storage. The device cannot be placed in a student’s pocket or on their person. The district is not responsible for the loss of, or damage to personal property.

We understand that communication is important. If your student needs to contact you during the day, they may use the student phone in the main office during passing periods or with staff permission. Likewise, if you need to reach your student, you may call the Briggs office at (541) 744-6350, or email.

Students using an electronic device during the school day will face disciplinary action.

  1. The first time a student violates this policy their phone will be brought to the office to be picked up at the end of the student’s day on campus and will be documented with a minor referral.

  2. Future violations will require a parent/guardian to retrieve the personal electronic device and will be documented with a major referral.

  3. Further violations will result in a technology contract that will require students to proactively secure their phone in Student Services each day.

BMS staff requests that parents and students honor our desire to preserve the integrity of the learning environment and support our decision to discourage the use of personal electronic devices that may disrupt the lesson, classmates, and the teacher.
