NewseumED: Scholarship Opportunity

Encourage your students to apply for a chance to represent THEIR state at a prestigious high school journalism conference in our nation’s capital next summer.

Each year, one high school junior from every state and the District of Columbia is selected to attend the (all-expenses-paid) Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference in Washington, D.C. Conference dates for 2020 are June 19-24.

Sponsored by the Freedom Forum in honor of the late Al Neuharth, founder of USA TODAY, the Newseum and the Freedom Forum, the goal of the program is to encourage free-spirited students to pursue a career in journalism and to emphasize the importance of the First Amendment in a democracy. Each student is awarded a $1,000 scholarship to the college of his/her choice.

Additional information about the program — and its online application — can be found at www.freespirit.org. The deadline to apply is Saturday, Feb. 1. Questions? Contact Karen Catone at kcatone@freedomforum.org or 202/292-6271.

NewseumED: Online Election Resources

The presidential race continues with the Iowa caucuses just around the corner. Are your students feeling stumped by the media mayhem and roaring rhetoric of political campaigns? Explore our EDCollection “Decoding Elections: Process, Persuasion & Participation” for classroom-ready lesson plans and primary sources to help demystify election procedures and empower student voices.

NewseumED: Free Virtual Classes

In our virtual class “On the Campaign Trail,” participants dive into historical and contemporary examples of campaign ads to gain a deeper understanding of the techniques the media uses to influence voters. Visit NewseumED.org to learn more about all of our virtual classes and book one today!

NewseumED: Resource of the Month: ‘Am I Being Fair?’ Lesson Plan

In newsrooms, if someone has too strong a connection to a story, they are said to have a conflict of interest. Their personal bias disqualifies them from covering the story. A video and graphic introduce four proven strategies students can use to counter their own bias when surfing online or conducting research; then students practice using these strategies when investigating a real-life issue. Find the full lesson plan here.
